SALISBURY, NC - Pfeiffer junior Chris Woods (Greensboro, NC) scored a career-high 34 points and added 10 rebounds for a double-double, leading the Falcons to a 97-78 win over USC Aiken in menís basketball action at the Salisbury Roundball Classic on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Falcons improve to 2-1, while the Pacers fall to 2-1.
Woods had 18 points in the final half as Pfeiffer pulled away over the final 12 minutes. The teams were deadlocked 40-all at the break, but the Falcons took the lead for good when James Morse completed a three-point play a minute into the second half.
The Pacers pulled even at 53-all with a seven-point run that included a pair of baskets by Michael Technow (Boca Raton, FL) and a three-pointer by Casey McMasters (Harrisburg, PA). That would be the final tie of the contest as Kierre Jordan (Atlanta, GA) sank a pair of free throws with 13:35 remaining and Pfeiffer held the lead the rest of the way.
Technow pulled Aiken within 70-65 on a jumper with 8:55 left then Pfeiffer raced out to its first double-digit lead at 78-67 with 6:56 to go. A dunk by Woods stretched the lead to 89-72 with 2:09 remaining. USCA led by as many as seven in the opening half, but Pfeiffer erased the deficit and tied the contest with 54 seconds left in the half on a free throw by Woods.
Jeff Pettiway (Edgewood, MD) added 15 points for the Falcons, including a perfect 10-for-10 day at the charity stripe. Jordan reached double figures with 10 points, while James Crowder (High Point, NC) had 10 rebounds and six assists.
Technow came off the bench to lead USCA with 16 points and added six boards. McMasters had 15 and Bryon Faison (Sumter, SC) 13. Sterling Council (Camden, SC) and Rashad Flowers (Charleston, SC) each had 10 points off the bench.
Pfeiffer shot 47% in the second half and 42% for the game, while Aiken hit just 37% in the second half and 39% for the contest. Pfeiffer held a 44-42 edge on the glass and helped force 31 Pacer turnovers.
