MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Men’s volleyball at Pfeiffer University made history again on Friday night as the Falcons secured their first-ever Conference Carolinas victory with a 3-2 (32-30, 25-30, 30-25, 24-30, 15-9) win over King College inside the Merner Gym. Pfeiffer improves its overall mark to 3-3, 1-1 in league play. The Tornados drop their first conference match dipping to 0-3, 0-1.
The Falcons needed a couple of extra points in set one to grab the early advantage. Micah Bortner (Dallastown, PA), Andrew Whalen (Apopka, FL) and Eric Edelman (Henrietta, NY) each had four kills in the opening win. James Friddle (Cartersville, GA) led the Tornados with eight kills, but King couldn’t stop Pfeiffer from hitting .342 in the first set win.
King bounced back for a five-point set number two win. Friddle paced the Tornados with five more kills using a late-run for the 30-25 win. Clancy Gay (Cincinnati, OH) led the Falcons with seven kills in the second set.
Set three and four again went back and forth, including the final score, as Pfeiffer scored the 30-25 win in set three while King again came back for a 30-24 win to force a fifth set. Through the fourth, Gay had pushed his kill total to 13 while Bortner registered an even dozen. Friddle again continued to pace King with 20 kills.
In the deciding set, points went back and forth with King holding an 8-7 lead halfway through the contest. This time, it was Pfeiffer’s turn to bounce back hitting .333 in the final set to finish where they started, scoring their first league win in the school’s history.
Friddle finished with a match-high 20 kills followed by Michael Koebel (Richmond, VA) and Cameron Sitler (Pearland, TX) with 12. Pfeiffer finished with a team-high 14 kills from Gay while Bortner capped at 13, Whalen at 11.
The Falcons will continue action this weekend in the Lucky Dog Invitational with an exhibition match against Virginia Tech’s club team and then finished the event with York on Sunday. First matches on Saturday begin at 11:00 a.m.
