MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Using a six-run top of the fifth and seven hurlers, 11th-ranked Catawba College was able to hold on to a 7-6 win over Pfeiffer University on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Joe Ferebee Field. Despite committing four errors on the day, the Indians remain unbeaten at 9-0 this season while Pfeiffer drops to 3-6.

The Falcons took a 3-0 lead into the fifth as Myles Pearl (High Point, NC) connected on a solo blast to right in the second and brought in two more with his single in the fourth. Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC) led the frame off with a single to left while Carlos Badillo (Gurabo, PR) drew a base-on-balls to score on Pearl’s base hit.

The Catawba fifth began when Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC) drew a lead-off to start a stretch of six-straight Indians to reach the base paths. After a single from Corey Parker (Kernersville, NC) and RBI base hit from Griffin Wise (Gastonia, NC)  put the visitors on the board, Wade Moore (Salisbury, NC) would later come up with a go-ahead, opposite-field three-run shot to left putting the Indians up 4-3. The inning finished with a two-single back up the box courtesy of pinch-hitter Micheal Tancini (Concord, NC).

Pfeiffer fought back with two runs in the eighth taking advantage of two more Tribe errors as a dropped pop up on the left side of the infield allowed Lyon to score. Aarin Sharpe (Winterville, NC) then made it a one-run game with his two-out single to left. Reliever Brett Hatley (Salisbury, NC) battled back to retire Will Davis (New London, NC) on strikes to end the frame.

In the ninth, an all-important insurance run for Catawba would score thanks to Craige Lyerly (Salisbury, NC) beating out a relay throw to first on a potential double play ball. Lyerly’s hustle allowed Moore to score for a 7-5 lead. The Falcons would threaten again in the ninth as Josh Strickland (Liberty, NC) picked up an RBI with his groundout to short, but Catawba closer Travis McSweeney (Palm Harbor, FL) would end the game with a strikeout to preserve the win and earn the save.

Trevor Mullins (Jamestown, NC) picked up the win tossing 1.2 innings of shutout ball for the Indians while Austin Campbell (Charlotte, NC) took the loss after his four innings of work. Offensively, the Falcons were led by Pearl and his two-hit, three RBI day while Zack Pou (Stanley, NC), Julian Medina (Glen Cove, NY) and Sharpe each finished with a pair of hits for the hosts. Moore, Wise and Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC) each had a couple of hits for Catawba.

Pfeiffer will wrap up their five-game in four-day homestand with Carson-Newman on Wednesday afternoon. First-pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m. at Joe Ferebee Field.
