LYON'S SIX RBI LEADS BASEBALL TO DH SWEEP AT BELMONT ABBEY WITH 9-3 AND 8-4 WINS

BELMONT, N.C. - The Belmont Abbey baseball team dropped both games of its doubleheader with the visiting Pfeiffer Falcons, losing the opener 9-3 and falling 8-4 in the nightcap. Pfeiffer improves to 5-7 overall and 3-2 in Conference Carolinas, while the Abbey falls to 4-7 overall and 2-2 in Conference Carolinas.

In game one Pfeiffer scored the first three runs of the game, plating one in the first and two more in the second before the Crusaders closed the lead to 3-1 with a run in the fifth, as Tim Dye singled home Justin Baxley.

The Falcons stretched their lead to 4-1 with a run in the sixth on a solo homer by Preston Lyon, but the Abbey inched back to within one in the bottom of the inning as Danny Brion split the gap in left center to score Baxley and Spencer Sobol.

Pfeiffer responded by scoring the final five runs of the game to pull away, getting one in the seventh and four more in the eighth.

Nick Fogleman earned the win, as he allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings, striking out six and walking one. He opened the game by retiring the first ten batters he faced. Jordan Cudney took the loss. He gave up four runs on six hits in six innings, fanning seven and walking one.

Pfeiffer finished with 13 hits as Lyon finished four for five with four RBI and a run scored. Josh Strickland went two for three. The Abbey rapped out ten hits as Brion, Baxley and Caleb Shore all collected two hits.

In game two, the Abbey drew first blood as Josh Frazier singled home Baxley in the bottom of the second for the game's first run. The advantage moved to 2-0 in the fourth as Baxley drilled a solo shot to right center. Pfeiffer took its first lead one inning later by scoring three runs, getting a two-run homer by catcher Jesse Dunn and an RBI double by Myles Pearl.

One inning later, the Abbey moved ahead again with two runs, coming a pinch hit double to left by Ryan Ronda that scored Dye and Ruben Cabrera. But the Falcons moved ahead for good in the top of the sixth as they scored five runs on five hits, getting two on a single by Lyon.

John McDaniel earned the win in a complete game effort, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out eight. Tyler Powell took the loss. He yielded four runs, three earned, on eight hits in five and one-third. He fanned eight.

Baxley had two of the Abbey's seven hits, coming in two at bats, and scored two runs. Lyon, Strickland and Zach Pou each had two hits for the Falcons, which finished with 12.

Game three of the series gets underway on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
