MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University and Glenville State College split a non-conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Jack Ingram Field. The Lady Falcons secured the opener 9-4 with nine unanswered runs, while the Lady Pioneers scored the first seven in the nightcap en route to an 8-3 victory. Pfeiffer improves to 11-13 while Glenville State moves to 10-12.
GAME ONE: Pfeiffer 9, GSC 4
The Pioneers began game one with four in the first scoring their first two runs on a Lady Falcon throwing error. Later in the inning, Megan Lesser (Mineral, VA) registered the first RBI with a bunt single to score Karly Eskew (Charleston, WV) before Katelyn Porter (Washington, WV) singled home Stacy Mack (Charleston, WV).
Pfeiffer would go on to score the final nine runs beginning with two in the second and third. Bryttny Kreshka (Roseburg, OR) picked up a pair of RBI with an inside-the-park home run down the right-field line. An inning later, Kirsten Patterson (Anthem, AZ) and Heather Nobles (Angier, NC) would pick up run-scoring base hits to left giving the Lady Falcons a 4-3 lead.
In the fifth, Nobles and Andrea Wagner (Wauseon, OH) each registered a run batted in before Nobles struck again in the sixth with a three-run blast to center, finishing game one 2-for-4 with five RBI. Allison Braswell (Asheboro, NC) bounced back from her rough first frame to earn the win. Porter led the Lady Pioneers with three hits.
GAME TWO: GSC 8, Pfeiffer 3
As they did in the opener, Glenville State started with four more in the first, this time making it hold up for good. Eskew had the first big blow with a two-run single down the left-field line. Tia Via (Cool Ridge, WV) later followed with an RBI-double to right-center before scoring on Christie Hittel’s (Lumberport, WV) base hit to right.
Glenville State tacked on three more in the second with one swing from Eskew. After Brittany Handley (St. Albans, WV) and Leanne Harris (Windsor, ONTARIO) drew back-to-back lead off walks, Eskew to a 2-0 fastball to left-center for a 7-0 visitor lead. Pfeiffer first run followed in the home half of the second as Wagner brought in Nobles with her groundout back to the mound.
The final runs of the afternoon came with another Eskew at-bat in the Lady Pioneer fourth grounding out to second while Kreshka delivered a two-run bomb to right in the Lady Falcon seventh. Jessica Fedor (Wantage, NJ) earned the win in game two tossing five innings, allowing just one run on seven hits. Eskew and Porter each tallied three more hits in game two leading Glenville State.
Pfeiffer returns to the diamond on Saturday afternoon in a Conference Carolinas road match up at Anderson.
