PFEIFFER SAAC TO HOST ANNUAL 'DRY NIGHT' TONIGHT TO BENEFIT THE MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at Pfeiffer University will sponsor its third annual ‘Dry Night’ beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 9th inside the Merner Gym. “Dry Night” is an evening of substance-free activities that raises awareness about the negative impact of drinking and alcohol abuse on college campuses.

‘Dry Night' also demonstrates Pfeiffer's commitment to community outreach and longstanding mission of service, while benefiting a worthy cause, the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  The night's activities will include Gatorade flip cup and pong tournaments, jell-o eating contests, dodge ball, a Mr. and Mrs. Pfeiffer University pageant, food and much more.

Drinking among college students and other 18-to-24-year-olds has increased since 1998 and contributes to an estimated 1,700 alcohol-related, unintentional student deaths per year, according to the latest National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism report. Annually, more than 696,000 students in the same age category are assaulted by another student who was drinking, and more than 97,000 students are victims of alcohol-related sexual assaults.

SAAC hopes to shed light on these serious statistics and situations in an inviting environment by offering an alternative to alcohol use. In two years, ‘Dry Night’ has successfully raised over $2,500 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and with the new addition of Mrs. Pfeiffer to this year’s lineup, SAAC hopes to exceed past amounts.

This event will be held from 7 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. in the Merner Gym on the Misenheimer campus.  For a $10 admission, participants will be admitted for the pageant and all games while receiving a ‘Dry Night’ t-shirt and food.  For those wishing to participate in just the Mr. Pfeiffer pageant and games, the cost is $5. All proceeds will benefit Make-A-Wish, an organization that has enriched the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work.
