FLYING FLEET SOAR PAST SOFTBALL IN A PAIR OF 10-0 WINS ON WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Led by the right arms of Heather Richey (Abbeville, SC) and Kelsey Spurrier (Charlotte, NC), along with the bat of Courtney Davis (Asheville, NC), Erskine College coasted to a pair of 10-0 wins over Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas softball action on Wednesday afternoon at Jack Ingram Field. The wins push Erskine to 15-16-1 overall, 7-1 in conference play while the Lady Falcons plummet to 14-20, 5-7.

GAME ONE: Erskine 10, Pfeiffer 0

Richey came out in game one firing a two-hitter with seven strikeouts in the complete game shutout. Richey faced one more hitter than the minimum in a seven inning game. Courtney Davis hit her first of three homers on the day with a two-run blast in the second giving the visitors their first two runs of the day.

In the fifth, Kelly Davis (Weaverville, NC) slapped a two-run double to left while Melinda Bowman (Aiken, SC) picked up the only RBI in a three-run sixth due to a Lady Falcon fielding error. The Lady Fleet capped off game one with three in the seventh thanks to a pair of fielder’s choices by Kerry Fincher (Easley, SC) and Richey while Jocelyn Smith (Greer, SC) sandwiched a RBI groundout in between. Amber Johnson (Spokane, WA) and Andrea Wagner (Wauseon, OH) had the two hits for Pfeiffer.

GAME TWO: Erskine 10, Pfeiffer 0 (6)

Erskine needed just six innings to take care of the Lady Falcons in game two as Spurrier dealt a complete-game three-hitter with seven of her own strikeouts. A four-run first for Erskine began with Kelly Davis and Melanie Henderson (Fountain Inn, SC) scoring on a couple of wild pitches. Courtney Davis later followed with the first of her two blasts in the nightcap with a two-run dinger to left. Davis added a big solo shot in the third.

Five Lady Fleet runs finished the day in the sixth as Bailey Thornton (Pauline, SC) just missed her own round-tripper by knocking a two-run double off the top of the fence in center. Pinch-hitter Christina Cothran (Boiling Springs, NC) put the dagger in with a three-run homer to left-center.

For Erskine, Courtney Davis finished the day 5-for-5 with three homers, five RBI and five runs scored adding three walks. Along with Johnson, Kylee Nichols (McMinville, OR) and Sarah Waylock (Cary, IL) had the hits for Pfeiffer.

The Lady Falcons return home on Friday afternoon for a pair of games against West Virginia State. Pfeiffer extended their scoreless innings streak to 18 hoping to snap it beginning 3:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
