MISENHEIMER, N.C. – West Virginia State University swept a pair of non-conference softball contests from Pfeiffer University on a blustery Friday afternoon at Jack Ingram Field. The Yellow Jackets took the opener 5-2 before needing just five innings for a 10-2 victory in the nightcap. WVSU improve to 16-12 overall while the Lady Falcons fall to 14-22.
GAME ONE: WVSU 5, Pfeiffer 2
The Yellow Jackets stung Pfeiffer early in game one with a pair of runs in the first frame. Margaret Osborne (St. Albans, WV) came up with the big hit, a two-out, two-run double to center that scored Kayla Sturms (Hemet, CA) and Kelsey Lorraine (Demorest, GA). Charli Small (Cross Lakes, WV) scored a run in the top of the third making it 3-0 by plating on a Pfeiffer error at third.
The Lady Falcons got on the board in the fifth snapping a 22 inning scoreless drought with a RBI-single from Bryttny Kreshka (Roseburg, OR) that allowed Sam Taylor (Surrey, BC) to scamper home from second. The Yellow Jackets added a solo run in the sixth before both teams traded a run in the seventh.
Cassie Nowery (Parkersburg, WV) delivered in her first at-bat of the day with a RBI-double in the sixth. In the seventh, Sturms’ sacrifice fly put the fifth run on the board for WVSU while Amber Johnson (Spokane, WA) registered a RBI-single to bring in Pfeiffer’s final run.
Along with Osborne’s pair of hits and two RBI, Andi Amrein (Cincinnati, OH) added a couple of hits helping Lorraine earn the victory in the circle. Lorraine went the distance allowing two runs, one earned, on eight hits with eight strikeouts in the win.
GAME TWO: WVSU 10, Pfeiffer 2 (5)
All of the Yellow Jackets damage would come in the second as all 10 runs came around with 15 hitters making it to the plate. Alexa Macri (Huntington, WV) began the stanza with a two-run blast to left-center before Lorraine’s bases-loaded walk. Small would smack a two-run double in front of Sturms’ solo home run while the inning later finished with a Sara Pelegreen (Hopedale, OH) two-RBI double to left.
Pfeiffer’s pair of runs came with one swing of Heather Nobles’ (Angier, NC) bat as the sophomore hit her team leading sixth home run, a two-run bomb to center, in the Lady Falcon fourth. Pelegreen earned the win for the Yellow Jackets allowing just the two runs on six hits.
Pfeiffer gets back into Conference Carolinas play on Saturday afternoon traveling to Mount Olive to meet with the Trojans. First-pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
