MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Catawba’s Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC) found the back of the net in the 101st minute of play as Indians snuck past Pfeiffer University 2-1 in double overtime on Thursday afternoon at N.E. Lefko Field. It was the 2010 season opener for both teams.
After a scoreless first overtime period with each team registering a shot, just 58 seconds into the second ten-minute period, Smith took a long pass from Mark Ketterer (Hamilton, NJ) and found the lower left corner of the net to give Catawba its golden goal victory.
The Indians scored the season’s first goal just 3:56 into the first half as another long pass just inside midfield from Eoin Duffy (Knocknacarra, IRELAND) found an onsides Deon Cuffie-Joseph (Arima, TRINIDAD & TOBAGO) for a one-on-one break and an eventual 1-0 lead.
Catawba held the lead into the 52nd minute until the Falcons Jeff Cannon (Lewis Center, OH) tallied his first of the season on a pair of assists from Johannes Tisell (Moindal, SWEDEN) and Dany Bardizbanian (Milledgeville, GA). Tisell, after receiving a pass from Bardizbanian, chipped his pass over to Cannon inside the box for the equalizer.
For the match, Pfeiffer led Catawba overall 19-12 in shots while Catawba net-minder Luke McCarthy (Naples, FL) turned away eight of the nine Falcon shots in the win. Alex Moreno (Huntersville, NC) made a half-dozen saves in the cage for Pfeiffer. Both teams had several chances late in the second half in attempts to avoid the extra soccer.
The Falcons return to action on Sunday afternoon traveling to Jefferson City, TN for a 4:00 p.m. matchup at Carson-Newman. Catawba will host USC-Aiken at 2:00 p.m. Saturday for their home opener.
