MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University ended its appearance in the 2010 Catawba Invitational with a 3-1 (13-25, 25-20, 20-25, 18-25) loss to Lander University on Saturday afternoon’s at Catawba’s Goodman Gym. The win pushes the Bearcats to 2-1 on the year while the Lady Falcons fall to 0-4.
Lander’s Chelsey Corgan (Deland, FL) served up a pair of early aces for a four-point lead while three kills from Abbie Ovbey (Mt. Gilead, NC) tried to bring Pfeiffer back late in the set. Two Lindsey Everhart (Cincinnati, OH) kills eventually gave the Bearcats a 25-13 win in the opener.
Pfeiffer bounced back to even the match at one set apiece led by a pair of Milana Mervosh (Roebuck, SC) and Kim Amerell (Lynchburg, VA) kills. The Lady Falcons bolted out to a 12-5 lead. Lander attempted a comeback with two more Everhart kills and service ace by Mallory Wasik (Keystone Heights, FL) in front of two more throw downs by Mervosh put the Lady Falcons up for good. Amerell clinched the set with the final kill for a 1-1 match.
Lander took another early lead on Pfeiffer errors in game three, before Colleen Wands (Apex, NC) served up one of her two aces in the match to put the Lady Falcons up 8-7. With a knotted contest at 11, the Bearcats would score nine of the next 10 points to create the final separation. Four Pfeiffer miscues finished off set three including on the game’s final point.
Pfeiffer ran out of gas in set four as a Candace LaRocca (St. Louis, MO) kill forced a Lady Falcon timeout at 10-5. A Mervosh kill brought Pfeiffer to within five at 14-9, but a Corgan ace broke Lander out to a 19-10 advantage. The Lady Falcons weekend concluded on the weekend’s unwelcomed theme of another unforced error in Lander’s 25-18 victory.
For Pfeiffer, Ovbey finished with a match-high 13 kills while Melissa McCracken (Washington, IL) paced Lander with 13. Everhart concluded with a dozen. LaRocca dished out a game-high 44 assists while Wands wrapped up with 31. Pfeiffer libero Kaci Markham (Asheboro, NC) set a new school record with 28 digs in the four-set match.
Pfeiffer will have a couple of days off before searching for their first win in the 2010 Conference Carolinas opener on Tuesday night. The Lady Falcons will host Barton at 7:00 p.m. in the Merner Gym. Live video and live stats will be available through www.gofalconsports.com.
