MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Forward Lindsay Godwin’s (Raleigh, NC) goal in the 74th minute proved to be the difference as Pfeiffer University defeated Flagler 2-1 in women’s soccer action on Sunday afternoon at the Queens Sports Complex. The win gives the Lady Falcons the 2010 Queens Soccer Classic championship behind their 2-0 record. The Saints, after beating host Queens 1-0 on Friday, evens to 1-1 on the year.
Squared at one goal apiece more than halfway through the second period, junior Megan Weston (Olathe, KS) corralled a Pfeiffer throw in before crossing to Godwin. The senior then found the back of the net on the header for the eventual game-winner.
In a scoreless tilt, the Lady Falcons struck first in the 29th minute of play as Mariah Martinez (League City, TX) fired a cross through the box that found Alyssa Wombwell (Grand Blanc, MI) for the game’s first strike.
Flagler would tie things up 4:52 in the second half when Justine Long assisted on a Lindsay Zullo header for the equalizer.
For the second-straight contest, Pfeiffer managed just two shots on goal, but made both of them count. Jamie Alcala (Fredericksburg, VA) secured the win in net for the Lady Falcons stopping five Saints shots.
Playing in a pair of neutral site contests to start the year, Pfeiffer will have its first true road test on Wednesday night. The Lady Falcons will travel over to Hickory to take on the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears at 7:00 p.m. Live stats, courtesy of Lenoir-Rhyne, will be available through www.gofalconsports.com.
