MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University split a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon hosing a tri-match inside the Merner Gym. The Lady Falcons just missed out on school records in both contests, falling 3-1 (25-23, 24-26, 23-25, 10-25) to Lenoir-Rhyne while sweeping Virginia Union 3-0 (25-12, 25-6, 25-9) with 17 service aces. Pfeiffer improves to 9-13 overall on the year.
In match one against the Bears, libero Kaci Markham (Asheboro, NC) put up a match-high 27 digs, 12 in set one alone, just missing her own school record of 30 set earlier this season. Freshman Kim Amerell (Lynchburg, VA) scored a career-best 19 kills hitting .385 to lead all hitters in match one. Behind Amerell, Mordini concluded with 13 kills while Lenoir-Rhyne’s Brooke Christenbury had 11.
As a team, Pfeiffer picked up 20 more digs than the Bears with 76, but Lenoir-Rhyne hit .423 in the final set to secure the win. The Bears had nine total team blocks in the win.
The sweep of Virginia Union saw the Lady Falcons come up three aces shy of the school record set last year at Johnson C. Smith. Jordan O’Bryant (Reidsville, NC) had six of them while Cassie Byerly (Lewistown, MT) had five. In the hitting department, Erin Gray (Sneads Ferry, NC) put down a match-high 10 kills hitting .714 in the win.
Kathryn Hobson (Asheboro, NC) finished behind Gray with seven kills while Amerell scored a half-dozen with Kasey Cain (Asheboro, NC). Combining both matches, setter Colleen Wands (Apex, NC) assisted on 73 points. As a team, Pfeiffer hit .310 in the match against the Panthers that includes totals of .448 and .385 in sets two and three.
Next on the slate for the Lady Falcons will be a big Conference Carolinas road matchup at Queens on Wednesday. Match time in Charlotte is schedule for 6:30 p.m.
