MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University hit a season best .348 in a 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-17) sweep over the visiting Converse Valkyries in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball action on Friday night inside the Merner Gym. The win pushes the Lady Falcons to 11-15 overall, 10-7 in league play while the Valkyries fall to 3-23, 2-15.
Jordan O’Bryant (Reidsville, NC) put down the first kill of the night before four-straight Converse errors and service ace by Kaci Markham (Asheboro, NC) put the Lady Falcons up 6-1 early in the opening set. Cassie Byerly (Lewistown, MT) served up back-to-back aces midway through the set before two-straight Abbie Ovbey (Mt. Gilead, NC) kills ended the initial contest.
Pfeiffer stormed out to a 7-2 lead in the middle set with another Markham ace and kill by Kim Amerell (Lynchburg, VA). Two Anna Vizvary (North Augusta, SC) kills put the hosts up 11 late, in front of a Milana Mervosh (Roebuck, SC) kill and attack error by Converse quickly put Pfeiffer up two sets to none.
Tied 14-14 going back and forth in set three, Amerell put down another one of her team high nine kills to put the Lady Falcons back up one that preceded kills from Vizvary and Kristina Mordini (Freeport, IL) that gave the hosts a lead for good. After a Converse timeout, Pfeiffer started a streak of six-straight points creating the match’s final separation.
For Converse, Val Thoms (Menasha, WI) had a match-high dozen kills while Katherine Buehler (Mooresville, NC) had six. Amerell, along with Ovbey, each had nine to lead the Lady Falcons while Mordini finished with eight.
Both teams will wrap up the 2010 regular season on the road Saturday as Pfeiffer heads to Limestone for an 11:00 a.m. tilt while Converse heads to Queens for a 2:00 p.m. match.
