GILLIARD DRAINS LATE FREE THROWS AND SCORES 17 AND MEN'S BASKETBALL STAYS UNBEATEN IN LEAGUE PLAY

BANNER ELK, N.C. – Pfeiffer’s Davon Gilliard knocked down a pair of free throws with 18 seconds left to help the Falcons to a 75-69 victory over Lees-McRae in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball action on Wednesday night. Gilliard dropped a game-high 17 points as the Falcons improve to 4-3 overall, 2-0 in league play while the Bobcats fall to 3-3, 0-1.

Both teams went back and forth for the entire first half with seven lead changes. Chris Woods broke the final tie of the first 20 minutes with a jumper at the 2:14 mark before a three-pointer by the Bobcats Matt Eller put the hosts up one. After another quick basket by Elijah Matthews, a pair of Woods free throws helped the Falcons to a 38-35 halftime lead.

A quick triple by Lees-McRae’s Reshon Benjamin knotted the contest for the eighth time just 18 seconds into the second stanza as the tenth and final tie came seven minutes later as another Woods free throw did the damage. After a quick layup by Jeremiah Henry and DeAndre Tillman, the Bobcats surrendered the lead for the final time after two Jeff Pettiway free throws and long-range three from reigning player of the week Josh Humphrey.  Up just one with 3:54 to go, freshman Kyler Gregory hit a crucial three to help seal the deal.

Behind Gilliard’s 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor, Pettiway followed with 15 while Woods and Humphrey chipped in with 14 and 13. For Lees-McRae, Daniel Sepokas contributed 17 while Adam McFerran and Sam Youse each had 10. The Bobcats shot 45% from the floor to lead that offensive category while Pfeiffer held the edge from three-point land and the charity stripe knocking down 20 of their 24 attempts.

Pfeiffer will have one more contest in December before the winter break hosting Livingstone in a rematch on Tuesday, December 14th. The Falcons rallied from a 17-point deficit in mid-November to defeat the Blue Bears by two. Tip time from the Merner Gym is set for 6:00 p.m.
