MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Senior guard Domonique China (Durham, NC) posted her second career triple-double with 10 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists to lead Pfeiffer University to an 83-48 victory over Coker College in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action on Wednesday night. Pfeiffer also broke the school record for blocks in a game with nine. The Lady Falcons put five total scorers in double-figures improving to 6-10 overall, evening to 5-5 in league play. The loss extends the Lady Cobras streak to five dropping to 2-13, 2-7.
Pfeiffer raced out to a 16-6 lead on a basket by Christina Harvey (Locust Grove, VA) just 6:24 into the contest. After a Shelley Reese (Brown Summit, NC) jumper pushed the lead to 12, Coker’s Ashley Thompson (Columbia, SC) would knock down her own jumper to slice the lead back down to10, 21-11. The Lady Falcons then exploded with a 14-3 run with six different scorers extending the lead to 21 with 6:07 before the break. Triples by Reese and Sam Craven (Asheboro, NC) helped the hosts carry a 48-22 lead into the locker room.
Hot shooting carried over into the second half for the Lady Falcons as six points in a 1:15 span cushioned the lead to 30 at the halfway point of the period. Kellie Rhoney (Catawba, NC), Vontreece Hayes (Greensboro, NC) and Reese each had a pair of points in the run. Pfeiffer’s largest lead of the night came with 5:18 remaining as Harvey drained two free throws for a 38-point lead.
In addition to the school record blocks, led by Brittany Cox’s (Winston-Salem, NC) six, Pfeiffer also knocked down a season high 31 field goals shooting 49% on the night. The Lady Falcons drained 12 three-point shots shooting 46% while receiving 29 points off the bench. Coker had a tough time with the pesky Pfeiffer defense going 0-for-13 from behind the arc.
Harvey led all scorers on the night with 17 points, followed closely by Reese’s 16 off the bench. Celeste Caudill (Sparta, NC) deposited a dozen while China and Rhoney each had 10. Rhoney shot 80% from the field going 4-for-5 while Caudill was a perfect 4-for-4 from downtown. The Lady Cobras were led by Maija Castren (Vantaa, FINLAND) and her 14 points. Janell Dunham (Bear, DE) also chipped in with 10.
Pfeiffer will begin the second-half of the Conference Carolinas season at home on Saturday night. The Lady Falcons will entertain Converse beginning at 5:30 p.m.
