DUNN AND SHUFORD LEAD BASEBALL TO 10-0 BLANKING OF CATAWBA IN HOME OPENER

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University used a 2-for-4 day from Jesse Dunn (Easley, SC) and six strong innings on the mound from starter Eric Shuford (Shelby, NC) claiming a 10-0 shutout victory over visiting Catawba in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday at Joe Ferebee Field. Dunn posted a game-high four RBI while Shuford fanned 10 helping the Falcons improve to 3-1. The loss evens the Indians record to 2-2.

Pfeiffer posted three in the second as freshman Kevin Price (Asheville, NC) brought home Aarin Sharpe (Winterville, NC) with his one out sacrifice-fly to right. Dunn capped the frame with a two-run blast to left for the early 3-0 advantage. After a RBI-single in the fourth from Eric Shoemaker (Huntersville, NC), the Falcons opened things up with a six spot in the sixth.

Shoemaker started the home half of the sixth with a solo shot to center for his second of the year. Three hitters later, Dunn collected his third and fourth RBI of the day with a single to left that drove home Hunter Boehme (Winston-Salem, NC) and Price. Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC) later followed with a two-run double to right-center plating Jacob Yates (Blairs, VA) and Dunn, before freshman Jon Gray (Granite Falls, NC) singled home Lyon with the frame’s final run.

The trio of Shuford, Jacob Moore (Rural Hall, NC) and John Sullivan (Concord, NC) combined on the four-hit shutout allowing just two runners to reach third all day. Shuford tossed six allowing just three hits with his 10 strikeouts. Moore followed in the seventh and eighth scattering just one hit with a pair of strikeouts while Sullivan struck out one in a three up, three down ninth.

Dunn was one of three Falcons with multi-hit afternoons as Shoemaker went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI while Matt Wade (Chapel Hill, NC) collected two hits in four plate appearances with a run scored. Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC) collected two of Catawba’s four hits on the day adding a pair of walks.

The same two teams meet on Wednesday afternoon in the back end of the home and home series at Catawba’s Newman Park. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
