JEFFERSON CITY, T.N. - The Carson-Newman College softball team swept visiting Pfeiffer Saturday afternoon, winning the first game 7-1 and claiming an 8-0 victory in game two in five innings at the Lady Eagles Softball Complex. The sweep moves the Lady Eagles to 4-2 on the season while Pfeiffer drops both of their season openers.

In the first game, junior pitcher Mary Shealy (Clinton, S.C.) grabbed her second win of the season for Carson-Newman in the circle. Shealy (2-1) threw a complete game, giving up four hits, one run and seven walks while recording six strikeouts.

C-N took the lead in the opening inning with an RBI from sophomore catcher Bri Shoemake (Ooltewah, Tenn.) that brought in senior left fielder Leah Price (Spring City, Tenn.)

Pfeiffer put their only dent in the scoreboard in the top of the third thanks to a solo home run over the left field wall from shortstop Celia Dew. It took the Lady Eagles two innings to answer back, but when they did they nearly put the game away.

A five-run fourth was sparked by a lead-off triple from freshman third baseman Sara Kelley (Birchwood, Tenn.). Freshman Dariayn Wright (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) was brought in to pinch run for Kelley. Junior first baseman Amy Lawrence (Knoxville, Tenn.) drew a walk from Pfeiffer starter Melanie Conklin (0-1).

A double steal from Lawrence and Wright put C-N’s first run on the board. With two outs on the board, second baseman Amber Hewitt (Ringgold, Ga.) sent a single up the middle of the field, scoring Lawrence. A single from Shoemake brought in Hewitt. A stand-up triple from senior third baseman Whitney Kee (Knoxville, Tenn.) helped Shoemake cross the plate. Junior right fielder Kim Whaley’s RBI scored Kee finished the damage in the inning, giving Carson-Newman a 6-1 lead.

Junior center fielder Cassidy Skeen (Powell, Tenn.) capitalized on a Pfeiffer mistake in the fifth, scoring on a throwing error by Falcons third baseman Sarah Waylock.

Starting freshman pitcher Jessie Forrester (Flintstone, Ga.) pitched a complete game shutout for Carson-Newman in the second game. Forrester was on the mark from the opening inning, giving up just three hits and two walks in the five-inning game. Forrester (2-1) fanned four in the game.

The Lady Eagles grabbed their first run in the opening inning on a throwing error from Pfeiffer’s Waylock that allowed Skeen cross the plate.

A five-run second inning for Carson-Newman began when freshman first baseman Caitlyn Lance (East Ridge, Tenn.) drew a lead-off walk, then took home on a Pfeiffer throwing error.

A Shoemake single scored Whaley with one out on the board. A three-RBI double from Kee brought in Wright, Price and Shoemake for C-N to take a 6-0 lead.

The Lady Eagles added a run in the third on a Whaley RBI double. Kee picked up her fourth RBI in the game in the bottom of the fourth, scoring Skeen.

Pfeiffer returns to action on Wednesday hosting Catawba College in their home opener at 1:30 p.m.
