MEN'S VOLLEYBALL DROPS CONFERENCE OPENER AT MOUNT OLIVE; BOUNCE BACK FOR 3-0 WIN OVER YORK

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Adam Miracle led four players in double figures with 15 kills and added a career-high 10 digs for his first collegiate double-double as Mount Olive outlasted Pfeiffer 25-21, 26-24, 24-26, 25-19 in Conference Carolinas action Saturday on the final day of the 2011 MOC Men’s Volleyball Invitational Saturday at Kornegay Arena. Pfeiffer defeated York in three sets (25-14, 25-17, 25-14) to wrap up tournament play.

Jack Tutty’s kill broke a 9-9 tie in the first set and Mount Olive (11-2 overall, 4-0 Conference Carolinas) led the remainder of the set. The Trojans led by as many as four, but Pfeiffer pulled within 20-19 after a kill by Drew Burdette, who had eight of his match-high 19 kills in the opening set. But Mount Olive scored the next two points on a kill by Adam Miracle and a double block by Benedikt Schirmers and John Nunns as the Trojans pulled away to take a one-set lead.

Pfeiffer (5-3, 0-1) recorded five of its 10 team blocks in the second half as the Falcons turned an early four-point deficit into a 19-15 lead after Lance Johnson contributed three blocks to a 6-0 run. But Alejandro Rivera came off the bench and helped spark a Mount Olive run, combining with Nunns on a block to pull the Trojans within one. After the teams exchanged side outs, Tutty and Jackson Mettechecchia combined on a block to tie the set 21-21.

A Trojan ball handling error put Pfeiffer a point away from evening the match at a set apiece, but Tutty’s kill saved a set point. Miracle broke a 24-24 tie with a kill and combined with Tutty for a block on set point to give the Trojans a two-set lead.

Mount Olive appeared to be on its way to a three-set win as the Trojans built an 11-5 lead in the third set after kills by Tutty and Angel Dache. But Michael McLaughlin sparked a Pfeiffer run with a pair of blocks as the Falcons tied the set 15-15. Miracle’s kill gave Mount Olive a 24-23 lead, but Pfeiffer saved a match point on setter Evan Fullerton’s second-ball kill. McLaughlin’s kill broke the tie and the Falcons used a Trojan attack error to extend the match to a fourth set.

A block by Johnson and Eric Edelman gave Pfeiffer the first point of the fourth set, but Dache served back-to-back aces in a 4-0 Trojan run and Mount Olive led the remainder of the set. After Dache’s kill gave Mount Olive a 7-4 lead, he two teams sided out most of the set as the margin never grew above five points or fell below three points the rest of the way. Nunns recorded a kill and a block during a match-ending 5-2 run to seal the win.

Dache and Tutty finished with 12 kills apiece for Mount Olive, while Nunns added 10 kills and a team-high five blocks. Mettechecchia recorded 52 assists for the Trojans. Mount Olive had 13 kills and only two errors in 21 attempts (.524 hitting percentage) in the fourth set and finished with a .274 hitting percentage for the match.

Edelman recorded eight kills for Pfeiffer, as did McLaughlin, who also had a match-high eight blocks. Johnson added seven blocks for the Falcons. Fullerton finished with 38 assists.
