#13 LENOIR-RHYNE SWEEPS PAIR FROM SOFTBALL; CONKLIN COLLECTS HR AND THREE HITS

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Lenoir-Rhyne University, ranked #13 in the latest NFCA national poll, swept Pfeiffer University in both ends of a doubleheader during non-conference softball action on Thursday afternoon at Jack Ingram Field. The Bears scored 6-5 and 11-2 victories to improve to 6-2 on the year while the Lady Falcons remain winless at 0-6.

GAME ONE: Lenoir-Rhyne 6, Pfeiffer 5

Down 6-1 headed to the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Falcons rallied for two in the sixth and had the winning run in scoring position in the seventh before eventually falling by a run. After Amber Johnson (Spokane, WA) started the sixth with a walk, freshman Celia Dew (Sanford, NC) followed with a quick double to right. Johnson would later score on Sarah Waylock’s (Cary, IL) sac-fly to foul territory in left, while Dew later plated on a wild pitch.

In the seventh, Allison Braswell (Asheboro, NC) drew a leadoff walk, followed by a Kirsten Patterson (Anthem, AZ) single to center. After Andrea Wagner (Wauseon, OH) reached on an error, Melanie Conklin (Wellington, OH) took a hit-by-pitch that scored pinch-runner Rachel LaBar (Bradenton, FL) from third for a 6-4 contest. Dew later picked up a sac-fly to left slicing the deficit to one, but a Hannah Jackson (Greensboro, NC) pop out to short ended the opener.

Earlier, a solo home run by the Bears’ Jody Mizelle (Colerain, NC) put the visitors on the board in the third, before a RBI-single from Braswell tied the contest in the fourth. Mizelle put Lenoir-Rhyne back up one on a run-scoring single in the fifth, before the Bears tacked on four in the sixth. Kristin Lackey (Hickory, NC), Tameron Sealey (Mount Holly, NC) and Mizelle had the sixth frame RBI for the Bears.

Dawon Millwood (Hixson, TN) scored the win on the mount tossing six innings allowing four runs on five hits. Megan Laxton (Taylorsville, NC) came in late in the seventh to earn her second save of the year. Mizelle paced the Bears with a 4-for-4, three RBI outing in game one while the Lady Falcons were led by Conklin’s 2-for-3 effort.

GAME TWO: Lenoir-Rhyne 11, Pfeiffer 2 (5)

Pfeiffer struck first in game two as Wagner singled home Sam Taylor (Surrey, BRITISH COLUMBIA) in the second. In the third, Lenoir-Rhyne used a four spot to grab a three run lead as Haily Jarman (Wadesboro, NC) delivered the big blow with a three-run blast to left.

After a leadoff solo homer from Conklin started the Pfeiffer third, the Bears would add on three in the fourth and four in the fifth to finish off the sweep. Sarah Atkins (Newport News, VA) and Jarman had the only two RBI in the fourth while Mizelle smacked a two-run dinger in the top of the fifth that coupled with two more RBI from Jarman and Heather Brock (Yadkinville, NC).

Lauren Harris (Yadkinville, NC) tallied the complete game win in the nightcap allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Mizelle and Atkins led the Bears with a pair of hits in game two while Waylock finished her afternoon 2-for-2.

Pfeiffer will now have a couple of days off before opening up Conference Carolinas play on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Falcons head north to Barton for the league opener slated for 2:00 p.m.
