PEMBROKE, N.C. – UNC-Pembroke claimed a sweep over Pfeiffer University with 3-1 and 2-0 victories in non-conference softball action on Tuesday afternoon at LRA Field. The Lady Braves move to 9-7 on the year while the Lady Falcons committed three errors in each contest falling to 2-8.
In the opener, Melanie Conklin started things off with a leadoff double in the first and later scored on Sarah Waylock’s sacrifice-fly to center. UNCP responded in their half of the first with a RBI bunt single by Morgan Patrick. In the second, UNCP added an infield single by Schanique Barrett and a Patrick run-scoring double in the sixth to close out game one. Barrett led the Lady Braves with three hits in game one while four different Lady Falcons picked up a hit in the opening loss.
In the nightcap, UNC Pembroke scored late runs in the fifth and sixth frames to collect a 2-0 win. A dropped foul ball allowed Patrick’s fifth inning at-bat to continue resulting later in a double to left-center as she would eventually score on Courtney Hill’s triple to right-center. The Lady Braves tallied their second unearned run in the sixth on another Lady Falcon throwing error for the late insurance run. Hillary Jones paced UNCP offensively in game two with a pair of hits as did Conklin on the Lady Falcons side of the lineup card.
Pfeiffer will get back on the diamond on Friday traveling to Johnson C. Smith in Charlotte for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
