HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Sophomore forward Christina Harvey poured in a game-high 28 points with 14 rebounds as Pfeiffer University won their fifth-straight contest after a 69-41 victory over Coker College in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action on Tuesday night. The Lady Falcons move to 13-12 overall, 12-7 in league play needing a win in Saturday’s regular season finale to host a first round tournament game. Coker suffers the loss dropping to 3-20, 3-14.
Off a steal, Coker’s Megan Thomas gave the Lady Cobras their lone lead of the night with layup 75 seconds in. A 6-0 run on three-straight baskets by Harvey put the Lady Falcons up 10, 16-6, with 11:31 remaining in the first half. Shanice Cooper and Thomas cut the lead Pfeiffer down to eight with 5:16 left, before Brittany Cox pushed it to 13 with a layup 1:47 before the break. A triple by Cassie Kirby sliced the Lady Cobras deficit down to seven with under a minute left, but Harvey converted another shot with 29 second left for a 35-26 halftime lead.
After Thomas cut the lead back to seven 1:08 into the second half, the Lady Falcons bolted out on a 10-0 run to grab a 17-point advantage. Harvey and Cox each had a pair of baskets in the spurt. Pfeiffer got the lead up to 21 on a layup by Kellie Rhoney in front of another Thomas basket cutting the lead back to 19 at the halfway point of the second. Cox along with Celeste Caudill, drained late triples to cap off an 8-0 run as Pfeiffer cruised to the final buzzer.
Behind Harvey’s double-double, Cox followed with 20 points as Pfeiffer shot 50% from the field. Thomas led Coker with 17 points in 39 minutes of action. The Lady Falcons held the advantage on the boards 37-25 while the defense allowed just 15 second half points to the Lady Cobras.
Pfeiffer will wrap up its 2010-2011 regular season on Saturday night hosting Erskine at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Falcons will host their annual Pink Zone game to benefit breast cancer needing a win to clinch home court in the first round of the 2011 Conference Carolinas tournament.
