MISENHEIMER, N.C. Ė Gannonís Mary Eshenour (Waterloo, NY) scored half of her teamís 16 goals on Tuesday afternoon as the ninth-ranked Golden Knights pulled out a 16-14 victory over Pfeiffer University in womenís lacrosse action at N.E. Lefko Field. Gannon improves to 2-0 on the year while the Lady Falcons fall to 3-1.
Pfeiffer came flying out of the gates notching the first four goals in a 4:32 span. Shannon Bonnel (Mechanicsville, MD) put home two of the four while sisters Rachel and Sarah Hebberd (Golden, CO) each had one in the spurt. The Golden Knights responded with six-straight to grab a two-goal lead midway through the first half. Eshenour had three of those six while Christie Valentine (Friendship, MD), Jess Fugate (Wooster, OH) and Sarah Grzybinski (New Market, MD) had the others.
After two more strikes from Eshenour before the half, the Lady Falcons Katherine Athens (Huntingtown, MD) and Alex Cook (Commack, NY) would slam home tallied with 27 and 17 seconds left as Pfeiffer trailed 9-7 at the break.
Cook made it a one-goal game 3:49 into the second as Pfeiffer would net five of the first six in the second half to take a 12-10 lead. Athens, Cook and Sarah Hebberd would all strike again while Jessica Moulton (Huntingtown, MD) got in on the action as the Lady Falcons held the two-goal advantage with 16:42 remaining.
After three-straight from Gannon, Cook evened things again with a free position shot at 10:16 for a 13-13 contests. Eshenour and Moulton would trade goals at 7:04 and 5:20, but the Golden Knights would tack on their final pair of scores with Caitlyn Fisher (Cypress, TX) hitting at 4:39 while Eshenour added her eighth and final of the day at 2:03.
As a team, Gannon held a slight advantage over Pfeiffer in shots (32-29), groundballs (26-25) and draw controls (19-13). Individually, Cook led the Lady Falcons with a team-high four goals.
Pfeiffer will return home on Friday to take on Rollins beginning at 12:00 p.m.
