BASEBALL FALLS IN 16-11 NON-CONFERENCE SLUGFEST AT BELMONT ABBEY

BELMONT, N.C. - Belmont Abbey scored 15 runs in the first six innings, ten coming in the first three innings, and held off a late Pfeiffer rally to earn a 16-11 non-conference win this afternoon at Abbey Yard. The Crusaders move to 16-5, while Pfeiffer drops to 8-10.

The Falcons scored three unearned runs in the first inning before the Abbey exploded for five runs in the bottom of the inning. The first two batters of the inning reached base on a double by John Cucchiarella and a walk to Justin Vasquez. After a flyout, Joey Frabasile laced a double that scored Cucchiarella, and Kyle Buchanan ripped a single to left that plated Vasquez. Frabasile then came home on a balk, and Chris Vazquez made it 5-3 with a towering two-run blast to left.

Pfeiffer got one back in the second on an RBI triple by Preston Lyon to close within 5-4, but the Abbey blew the game open in the bottom of the inning with four runs. Frabasile ripped an RBI single, followed by a Danny Brion two-RBI single. Tim Dye worked a bases loaded walk to extend the lead to 9-4.

The score moved to 10-4 one inning later as Roberto Sanchez was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a single by Frabasile and scored on a single by Buchanan.

The scoring continued in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single from Caleb Shore. In the fifth the Crusaders tacked on three more on an RBI single from Buchanan and a two-RBI double by Brion.

Belmont Abbey ended the scoring with single runs in the sixth and seventh. In the sixth, Sanchez doubled home Shore, who led off with a single. One ininng later, after Pfeiffer scored four times, Brion produced an RBI groundout that plated Josh Frazier, who led off with a double to make the score 15-8.

In the ninth, the first two Falcons were retired before Jesse Dunn kept the game alive with a single. He moved to second on a wild pitch. After a walk, Mike Green smoked a double down the leftfield line to score Dunn and Green. Lyon kept the rally going with a run-scoring single. After another single followed by a pitching change, Joey Kopp registered a strikeout to end the game.

The Abbey recorded 18 hits as Frabasile finished 4-6 with two RBI and three runs scored. Buchanan and Brion both registered three hits. Brion drove in five runs and Buchanan recorded three.

Pfeiffer logged 15 hits as Lyon and Dunn both totaled three. Jon Gray, Eric Shoemaker and Matt Wade all had two. Wade drove in three runs.

Patrick Rossi earned the win in relief of starter Taylor West. Rossi gave up seven runs on nine hits in four and two-thirds innings, fanning three. Pfeiffer starter Alex Embler took the loss. He gave up five runs on four hits in a third of an inning, walking one.
