RESULTS VS. LEES-MCRAE* (2008-10-01 00:00:00)

Misenheimer, NC – The volleyball action in Merner gymnasium could only be described as energetic and intense on Wednesday night. The Pfeiffer Falcons triumphed over the Bobcats of Lees-McRae in a hard-fought five game battle for the lead spot in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball (25-22, 21-25, 25-16, 15-25, 15-10). Both teams were undefeated in the conference heading into the match. Pfeiffer is now 13-2 overall and 7-0 in the conference. Lees-McRae’s conference record falls to 5-1 in the conference and is 8-9 overall.
Game one started with both teams looking composed and prepared to remain undefeated. Petra Ljubicic (Asheboro, NC) kept Pfeiffer calm and in the game by serving as a strong defensive presence with multiple digs on the back line. Both the Falcons and Bobcats played like they knew every point would make the difference in this match, going point for point almost every play. The energy continued to build with each pass and attack. Junior Brittany Dickens (Wake Forest, NC) attacked at the net with fire in her eyes and power behind every touch. The Falcons showed composure when they closed out game one 25-22 after a pair of Lees-McRae service errors near the end.
The Falcon’s feathers were ruffled a bit by the Bobcats in the beginning of game two. Dickens continued to contribute to the kill tally, but Pfeiffer found the Bobcats doubling their score 6-12 with attacks from sophomore Whitney Kiser (Connelly Springs, NC) and freshman Megan Epperson (St. John, IN). The Falcons chased down the score with a four point run and were eventually able to tie it up at 15 with a monster kill by junior Victoria Parrish (Henderson, NC). The second game was full of diving saves and aces on both sides of the net. The Bobcats pushed through and took the set 21-25.
Pfeiffer senior Lauren Spiotta (Batavia, NY) began game three with a huge kill setting the tone. Pfeiffer dominated for most of the game and led by as much as 9 points. Senior Brittney Poole (Sparta, NC) provided solid and consistent serving for the Falcons. Lees-McRae’s Kiser attacked the net, but proved to be more successful in games one and two. The visitors had a late four point run, but were unable to keep up with the Falcons. Spiotta and Ljubicic block a final shot by Lees-McRae to end the game 25-16.
The Bobcats ran away with game four as soon as the whistle blew for the first serve. Pfeiffer collapsed and faced a 17 point deficit, despite trying to force long rallies. The Falcons struggled to break through the blocking of Katie-Marie Legg (Alta Loma, CA), Taylor Stice (Franklin, TN) and Epperson. Pfeiffer freshmen Colleen Wands (Apex, NC) and Erin Gray (Sneads Ferry, NC) stepped onto the court the try to revive the play. They both contributed to a 10 point run that brought Pfeiffer back into the game and held the Bobcats at 24 points for three plays. Ultimately, the run came too late and Pfeiffer dropped the game 15-25.
Spiotta opened up the final set with a spike that no one stood a chance of blocking and led the Falcons on a four point run. Lees-McRae regrouped after a time out and came back to the court refusing to let go of the match. Bobcat freshman Lauren Hall (Enka, NC) tried to put the game away with kill after kill. The Falcons stayed focused and composed in the intense atmosphere that had fans holding their breath. They were able to use the momentum from the run in game four and the excitement from the crowd to take the fifth game 15-10.
Despite a rough fourth game, the Falcons played an exciting match that brought the fans to their feet. Head Coach Ben Guiliano said, “We could have easily give up in game four trailing 19-2 but we hung together. We got a lot of momentum, particularly from freshman Erin Gray and back up setter Colleen Wands. I really think that helped us to springboard to game 5.”
Guiliano continued, “We were excited. We were passionate. I think we’re coming to realize we’re a pretty good team. We can compete with Lees-McRae who’s won the championship 10 years in a row. We expect to be able to compete with any of the top teams in our conference.” Thinking about the rest of the season Guiliano added, “It’s one game and we’re excited about it, but it’s just one game.”
Pfeiffer was led by Dickens with 14 kills. Ljubicic and Spiotta followed with 12 each. Ljubicic also led in aces with 3 and Spiotta tallied 5 blocks.
Epperson marked 9 kills and 10 blocks for the Bobcats. She was joined by Kiser who also had 9 kills and 6 blocks. Trisha Reece (Hanover, PA) tallied 2 aces.
The Falcons look to continue their success in their next match against Coker on Friday.Volleyball Box Score Lees-McRae vs Pfeiffer (Oct 1, 2008 at Misenheimer, NC) Lees-McRae ATTACK SET SERVE SRV DEF BLOCK GEN ## Player SP K E TA PCT A SA SE RE DIG BS BA BE BHE Totals 5 0 0 0 .000 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 TOTAL TEAM BLOCKS: 0.0 TEAM ATTACK BY SET Set K E TA Pct 1 0 0 0 .000 2 0 0 0 .000 3 0 0 0 .000 4 0 0 0 .000 5 0 0 0 .000 SET SCORES 1 2 3 4 5 TEAM RECORDS Lees-McRae (2) 22 25 16 25 10 8-9, 5-1 Pfeiffer (3) 25 21 25 15 15 13-3, 7-0 Pfeiffer ATTACK SET SERVE SRV DEF BLOCK GEN ## Player SP K E TA PCT A SA SE RE DIG BS BA BE BHE 1 Dickens, Lauren 5 8 8 28 .000 6 2 2 2 12 1 1 1 1 2 Ljubicic, Petra 5 12 6 36 .167 1 3 1 1 27 0 4 0 0 3 Spiotta, Lauren 5 10 2 24 .333 1 0 0 0 2 0 5 0 0 5 Gray, Erin 1 1 0 3 .333 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 7 Wands, Colleen 3 1 0 2 .500 6 0 0 0 5 0 0 0 0 8 Markham, Kaci 5 0 0 0 .000 1 0 0 0 3 0 0 0 0 9 Dickens, Brittany 5 15 5 37 .270 1 2 1 0 10 0 2 0 0 11 Poole, Brittney 5 0 0 0 .000 2 2 1 4 18 0 0 0 0 12 Parrish, Victoria 5 10 6 39 .103 1 0 1 0 7 0 2 0 0 23 Liebert, Morgan 5 1 2 6 -.167 39 0 0 0 13 0 0 1 1 Totals 5 58 29 175 .166 58 9 6 7 97 1 14 2 2 TOTAL TEAM BLOCKS: 8.0 TEAM ATTACK BY SET Set K E TA Pct 1 14 5 42 .214 2 11 9 42 .048 3 15 5 31 .323 4 10 7 37 .081 5 8 3 23 .217 Site: Misenheimer, NC (Merner Gym) Date: Oct 1, 2008 Attend: 300 Time: Referees: Volleyball Detailed Stats Volleyball Detailed Stats Lees-McRae vs Pfeiffer (Oct 1, 2008 at Misenheimer, NC) Lees-McRae ATTACK ASSIST SERVE BLOCKING RECEPT ## Player SP K E TA PCT A E TA Pct SA SE TA Pct Dig BHE BS BA BE 0 RE Pct Totals......... 5 0 0 0 .000 0 0 0 .000 0 0 0 .000 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 .000 TOTAL TEAM BLOCKS: 0.0 TEAM ATTACK BY SET Set K E TA Pct 1 0 0 0 .000 2 0 0 0 .000 3 0 0 0 .000 4 0 0 0 .000 5 0 0 0 .000 SET SCORES 1 2 3 4 5 TEAM RECORDS Lees-McRae (2) 22 25 16 25 10 8-9, 5-1 Pfeiffer (3) 25 21 25 15 15 13-3, 7-0 Pfeiffer ATTACK ASSIST SERVE BLOCKING RECEPT ## Player SP K E TA PCT A E TA Pct SA SE TA Pct Dig BHE BS BA BE 0 RE Pct 1 Dickens, Lauren 5 8 8 28 .000 6 0 1 6.000 2 2 21 .905 12 1 1 1 1 14 2 .875 2 Ljubicic, Petra 5 12 6 36 .167 1 0 0 .000 3 1 19 .947 27 0 0 4 0 18 1 .947 3 Spiotta, Lauren 5 10 2 24 .333 1 0 0 .000 0 0 0 .000 2 0 0 5 0 1 0 1.000 5 Gray, Erin 1 1 0 3 .333 0 0 0 .000 0 0 0 .000 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 1.000 7 Wands, Colleen 3 1 0 2 .500 6 0 0 .000 0 0 3 1.000 5 0 0 0 0 1 0 1.000 8 Markham, Kaci 5 0 0 0 .000 1 0 0 .000 0 0 1 1.000 3 0 0 0 0 6 0 1.000 9 Dickens, Brittany 5 15 5 37 .270 1 0 0 .000 2 1 21 .952 10 0 0 2 0 1 0 1.000 11 Poole, Brittney 5 0 0 0 .000 2 0 0 .000 2 1 19 .947 18 0 0 0 0 16 4 .800 12 Parrish, Victoria 5 10 6 39 .103 1 0 0 .000 0 1 8 .875 7 0 0 2 0 8 0 1.000 23 Liebert, Morgan 5 1 2 6 -.167 39 0 1 39.000 0 0 6 1.000 13 1 0 0 1 0 0 .000 Totals......... 5 58 29 175 .166 58 0 2 29.000 9 6 98 .939 97 2 1 14 2 66 7 .904 TOTAL TEAM BLOCKS: 8.0 TEAM ATTACK BY SET Set K E TA Pct 1 14 5 42 .214 2 11 9 42 .048 3 15 5 31 .323 4 10 7 37 .081 5 8 3 23 .217 Site: Misenheimer, NC (Merner Gym) Date: Oct 1, 2008 Attend: 300 Time: Referees: Short Box Score Short Box Score (Match) Lees-McRae vs Pfeiffer (Oct 1, 2008 at Misenheimer, NC) Pfeiffer def.
