HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Thanks to a two-run blast by Shelby Brown in the top of the fifth, Pfeiffer University scored the first major upset in the 2011 Conference Carolinas tournament with a 2-1 victory over top-seeded Limestone College in softball action on Friday afternoon. The Lady Falcons improve to 19-28 overall advancing to face Queens at 4:00 p.m. Friday.
Pfeiffer trailed early 1-0 after an RBI infield single by Limestone in the top of the second. The decisive runs came in the Lady Falcon fifth as the frame began with a Melanie Conklin single to center. After a sacrifice bunt by Mikaela Strickland pushed Conklin to second, Brown came up with her crucial shot on a 1-1 pitch to put Pfeiffer up 2-1.
Senior Allison Braswell scored the win allowing just one run on five hits with three strikeouts. Braswell had to skirt around a sixth-inning jam to preserve the lead over her seven innings of work.
Pfeiffer will be back in action this afternoon taking on Queens at 4:00 p.m. Full updates on all tournament happenings are available at www.gofalconsports.com.
