MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University used a match-high 10 kills from Milana Mervosh (Roebuck, SC) and 31 assists from Cate Glendenning (Holly Springs, NC) to score a 3-0 (27-25, 25-17, 25-17) season-opening sweep over Virginia Union in day one of the Queens Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Lady Falcons hit a nice .360 in the final set to help earn head coach Steve Bintz his first collegiate victory.
Set one was a fight from start to finish as Pfeiffer found themselves down 23-20 late in the opener. Freshman Kelly Lancellot (Naples, FL) started the rally with one of her five kills on the day while a Mervosh kill staved off set point at 24-22. After Mervosh knotted the contest at 24 with another put down, Jessica Homrich (Grand Rapids, MI) had to square the contest at 25 following a Virginia Union kill. From there, a Glendenning ace and final kill from Mervosh put the Lady Falcons up 1-0.
Three-straight Panther errors gave Pfeiffer the second set lead for good early on as Erin Gray (Sneads Ferry, NC) delivered one of eight service aces on the day for a 9-6 advantage. Three more Virginia Union errors midway through put the Lady Falcons up 17-11 for their biggest lead of the afternoon before Jordan O'Bryant (Reidsville, NC) would serve six-straight points, three via aces, for a 24-15 lead. Lancellot would eventually put down the sets final kill for the Lady Falcons.
O’Bryant started the best hitting set of the day for Pfeiffer on the set’s first point in front of back-to-back Mervosh kills that put Pfeiffer up three at 8-5. After five miscues in a six-play span by Virginia Union, Homrich tossed down another one of her four kills on the afternoon for a 20-13 lead. The final kills of the contest were back-to-back by O’Bryant and Mervosh to secure the season-opening three set win.
Virginia Union aided Pfeiffer by committing 43 errors in the match. O’Bryant served up a match-high five aces in the win while libero Taylor Houser (Mount Holly, NC) added seven digs.
The Lady Falcons now turn their attention towards Saturday’s final day of the Queens Invitational taking on both St. Augustine’s and Winston-Salem State. Match times are set for 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
