SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Despite rain delays and stormy weather, the Pfeiffer men’s and women’s cross country teams toed the line together to begin the 2011 season at USC-Upstate’s Eye Opener Invitational. The women’s teams were originally supposed to race first, but due to delays, officials decided to run the men’s 8k and women’s 5k simultaneously. The men finished tenth while the ladies concluded sixth.
Junior Will Oliver led the men with a 29:14 effort in the 8k race, followed by freshman Jeff McClure, who ran a 31:30. Zack Allen, a junior, finished third for the team in 32:23, while sophomore teammate Trey Sharpe came in two seconds later. Sophomore Cody Bivens rounded out the team score finishing fifth. The team scored 476 points overall, finishing in 17th place overall including division one squads.
For the women’s 5k race, senior Kaitlyn Mullis led the team with a 21:01 finish, with freshman Megan Hunsucker not far behind, finishing in 21:27 for her first collegiate race. Fellow freshman Justine Serje, also debuting for the first time, finished third for the Lady Falcons with a 22:11. Junior Vlada Mouravieva came in less than forty-five seconds later while junior Rachel Biggerstaff rounded out the scoring finishing fifth for the team. Junior April Hinson and sophomore Nina Ubabuike placed sixth and seventh, respectively, for the Falcons. The team finished 13th overall with 418 points, and was 6th out of 12 Division II teams.
Both teams return to action next week at UNC-Wilmington’s Seahawk Invitational on September 9th at 6pm.
