DESPITE LEADING IN ALL MAJOR CATEGORIES, WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL DROPS FIVE-SETTER TO OPEN LEAGUE PLAY AT LIMESTONE

GAFFNEY, S.C. – Friday night’s Conference Carolinas opener for the Pfeiffer University women’s volleyball was virtually dead-even for all five sets until Limestone pulled out a 15-12 victory in the decisive set to score a 3-2 (25-23, 19-25, 25-21, 18-25, 15-12) win over the Lady Falcons inside the Timken Center. For the fifth-consecutive season, at-least one meeting between these two teams has gone the distance, including tonight, as the Saints improve to 5-5 overall, 2-0 in league play. The Lady Falcons, falling in their fifth-straight, dip to 3-5, 0-1.

Each team put down 51 kills on the night while Pfeiffer had fewer errors, a higher hitting percentage, more digs and 11 blocks (three more than Limestone) in the five-set loss. In the shortened fifth set tied at seven, the Saints reeled off the next three points to create just enough breathing room to pull out a win. Two Pfeiffer miscues aided the mini-spurt.

Limestone put three players in double-digit kills led by Kassi Boedeker and Holli Dawson’s 13. Danielle Enrico followed right behind with 10. Lady Falcons sophomore Kim Amerell led all hitters with 18 kills on the night hitting .244 in the loss. Erin Gray also concluded in double figures with 12. Setter Cate Glendenning led all setters with a match-high 40 assists while Enrico led the way with 26 digs, despite Pfeiffer winning that category 87-79. The match featured 22 ties with nine lead changes throughout the night.

Pfeiffer returns to league action next Friday and Saturday hosting Barton and Mount Olive a part of homecoming weekend 2011. Friday’s match with the Bulldogs begins at 7:00 p.m. while Saturday’s matinee with the Trojans kicks off at 1:30 p.m.
