MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Mount Olive College needed an apparent non-goal and penalty kick on Wednesday night to steal a 3-2 victory over Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas men’s soccer action at Amon Field. The Trojans got a bit of a gift when their first goal was ruled to have crossed the goal line from 20 yards out with a second via penalty kick to move to 3-6 overall, 2-1 in league play. The Falcons suffer another tough loss dropping to 1-7, 0-3.
Pfeiffer’s Taylor Scalera cashed in during the 17th minute of play as a pass from Dale Ashford led him to finding the back of the net for a 1-0 Falcon lead. In the 31st minute, the Trojans scored the first of their two questionable goals as a 20-yard shot by Alex Rodriguez was ruled to have crossed the goal line.
Just two minutes later, Vieux Sarr converted his penalty kick while two minutes after that, a make-up penalty kick was given to the Falcons as Fahret Salihovic put in his free attempt to make it a 2-2 game. Sarr assisted later in the 42nd minute as Omar Shazly cashed in with the eventual game-winner.
Pfeiffer outshot the Trojans 16-13 but was whistled for nine offsides to just three for Mount Olive. Zach Liles made a half-dozen saves in net during the loss. The Falcons will now travel to Coker on Saturday for another Conference Carolinas eastern division matchup beginning at 4:00 p.m.
