MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte used a balanced mix of offense and defense to claim a 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-18) sweep over host Pfeiffer in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball action on Wednesday night. The win pushes the Royals to a division-best 19-8 overall, 13-2 in league play while the Lady Falcons dip to 9-13, 6-9.
Queens took early control in set one as kills from Lindsey Everhart (Cincinnati, OH) and Brittany Harvey (Matthews, NC) coupled with three Lady Falcon errors put the visitors up 5-0. A pair of kills by Milana Mervosh (Roebuck, SC) brought the Lady Falcons within three a few plays later until Queens ran away for good with a six-point spurt with another kill coming from Everhart. The Royals closed out the opening set with a 15-7 run capped off by a Keri Kemp (Lake Mary, FL) kill to end it.
The middle set saw Pfeiffer carry a five-point lead late at 22-17 after a Queens error and pair of kills by Jordan O’Bryant (Reidsville, NC). Following an Everhart ace, Pfeiffer error and kill by Harvey, the Royals were down just one forcing a Lady Falcon timeout at 22-21. Mervosh provided another kill after the break to make it 23-21 until four-straight kills by Harvey, Avery Moore (Arlington, TX), Brittany Barren (Ham Lake, MN) and Kemp completed the rally putting Queens up in the match 2-0.
In the final set, Pfeiffer again carried a lead midway through as O’Bryant and Mervosh put down back-to-back kills for a 17-15 lead. From there, Jocelyn Kellinger (Roanoke, VA) served up the next eight points with two more kills by Anna Gibbs (Hickory, NC) and four miscues by the Lady Falcons. Barren would post three block assists during that spurt including back-to-back blocks with Gibbs before putting down the match’s final kill for a 25-18 win.
