HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Down two sets to none, host Coker College posted the rare comeback taking a 3-2 (20-25, 18-25, 25-19, 25-13, 15-10) victory over Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball action on Friday afternoon. The win pushes the Cobras to 9-18 overall, 6-10 in league play, while the Lady Falcons drop to 9-14, 6-10.
After seeing Coker force a decisive fifth-set, Pfeiffer jumped out on a 5-0 lead with kills from Kelly Lancellot and Cate Glendenning, before Coker used an ace from Hannah Vadakin, kill by April Griggs and four Pfeiffer miscues to start all over at 6-6. The Cobras then gained a four-point advantage on kills by Taylor Willis and Griggs with two aces from Katie McElveen, before Pfeiffer kills from Kelsey Blauser and Milana Mervosh, with an ace by Colleen Wands mixed in, brought the Lady Falcons back to within one down 11-10. A final kill by Jordan Arnsmeyer and three-straight Pfeiffer miscues completed Coker’s comeback.
Earlier, Coker tried to mount a rally in set one coming back from a 17-8 deficit as a Lady Falcon attack error brought the Cobras to within one at 21-20. Pfeiffer then benefitted from four-straight Cobra errors to take set one 25-20.
The Lady Falcons took control of set two jumping out to a 10-point, 19-9 advantage with kills from Kim Amerell, Blauser and Jordan O’Bryant while Kaci Markham served up a pair of aces. Amerell and O’Bryant would put down the final kills of the set as Pfeiffer took a 2-0 match lead.
In a back and forth third set, McElveen raced Coker out to a 14-11 advantage before Amerell cut it down to 15-13 midway through the set. An ace by Brittany Bass and kill by Willis extended the hosts’ lead up to five at 19-14 before Willis allowed the Cobras to avoid the sweep with the set’s final kills.
McElveen helped jaunt the Cobras out to a 7-1 lead in set four with five errors mixed in by the Lady Falcons. Like Pfeiffer had in set two, Coker found themselves up 10 at 18-8 after another McElveen kill. Four Pfeiffer errors over the sets’ final five plays brought forth a decisive fifth set.
For Coker, McElveen and Willis each put down 10 kills in the win while Samantha Celek assisted 35 times. Four Cobras finished in double-digit digs on defense led by McElveen and Bass’ 15. The Lady Falcons saw a match-high 15 kills come from Amerell and 37 assists from Glendenning. Five members of the black and gold concluded with digs in double-figures led by Wands’ 13.
Both teams will now look forward to Saturday’s regular season finale at home. Coker will host Queens while Pfeiffer entertains St. Andrews. Along with Barton, both teams find themselves in a three-way tie for the eastern division’s final playoff spot heading into Saturday.
