SALISBURY, N.C. - The Pfeiffer University baseball team picked up a split in a pair of games against Mars Hill and #18 Catawba on Super Sunday. The Falcons were able to rally late for a 10-8 victory over the Lions before falling in a comeback by the host Indians 7-5 in the nightcap. Pfeiffer now stands at 1-3 on the year.
Mars Hill scored the game's first three runs in the second and fourth frames before Pfeiffer tied it with three in the fifth. Justin Harris, Kyle Hackney and Jacob Yates each had RBI to tie the contest through five while the Falcons used four more runs just an inning later to take a 7-3 lead.
A solo homer by Preston Lyon put the Falcons on top to start the inning before Yates finished it with a two-run double to left-center. After the Lions tied it with four in their half of the seventh, Cole McGraw, Harris and Jon Gray would provide the final three runs needed in the seventh and eighth to secure the first win of the season.
In game two against #18 Catawba, Pfeiffer held a 3-0 lead after Aarin Sharpe stole home on a double steal in the third while later picking up an RBI-double in the fourth. Dalton Lindley added the other run with his double in the same frame.
Host Catawba rallied for three in the fourth and two in the seventh to grab a 5-3 lead before the Falcons knotted things with two more in the eighth on an Indian fielding error at third. A two-run shot by Catawba in the home half of the eighth doomed the Falcons for the final time.
Pfeiffer will now look forward to a Wednesday matchup at home against Brevard with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
