MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Scoring a game-high 29 on 11-of-19 shooting (58%), Brittany Cox (Winston-Salem, NC) once again led Pfeiffer University to victory with an 84-61 win over King College in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action in the Merner Gym on Saturday night. The Lady Falcons improve to 13-11 overall, 8-7 in league play staying just one game back of Coker, while the Tornado fall to 4-21, 4-13.
After Kelly Jackson (Lynchburg, VA) put King up 9-4 just 3:38 into the first, a pair of Kellie Rhoney (Catawba, NC) free throws started a 9-0 run that helped give the Lady Falcons a lead for the rest of the night. Before long, a three-pointer from Cox and pair of free throws by Jodie Lemons (Madison, NC) put Pfeiffer in complete control up 14, 27-13, with 6:05 to play before the break. Brooke Johnson (Roan Mountain, TN) got King to within 11 with just under a minute remaining before Shelley Reese (Brown Summitt, NC) drained two from the charity stripe to give Pfeiffer a 13-point, 37-24 halftime advantage.
In the second half, Rhoney jumped the lead up to 21 with a layup at the 14:51 before a Cox three countered a Johnson layup for King to put the hosts back up 22. The Tornado would get as close as 17 on free throws from Allison Bosse (Knoxville, TN) and layup by Kalen Collins (Wise, VA) with six minutes left until Pfeiffer again used Cox and Reese over the final minutes to earn a 23-point victory.
Behind Cox’s game-high 29, Rhoney finished the night with 14 while Reese connected for 12. Rhoney flirted with another triple-double added seven rebounds and six assists. Pfeiffer shot 45% for the game while knocking down 17-of-21 attempts (81%) from the free throw line. Johnson, along with Alley Sprouse (Newport, TN), paced the Tornado with 14 apiece.
Pfeiffer still remains one back of Coker for the east’s final playoff spot with just two games left. The Lady Falcons head to Barton on Tuesday while Coker hosts Queens, before the two teams square off in next Friday’s regular season finale in the Merner Gym.
