WILSON, N.C. - Barton College turned 23 Pfeiffer University turnovers into 14 steals and 25 points en route to a 73-66 victory in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs improve to 18-7 overall, 13-3 in league play while the Lady Falcons fall to 13-12, 8-8. Coupled with Coker's 71-68 comeback win at home against Queens, Pfeiffer is officially eliminated from conference tournament contention.
The Lady Falcons grabbed their last lead of the night at 7-6 on a layup by Vontenea Williams 3:18 into the first half. A three-pointer by Kellie Rhoney would tie the contest at 12-12 with 14:30 remaining in the half before Barton busted out on a 8-0 run in a three-minute span. Pfeiffer committed five turnovers in that span. The Lady Falcons used a triple from Brittany Cox to cut the lead down to six at the break, 32-26.
Pfeiffer showed some life in the opening minutes of the second getting the deficit down to two, 36-34 with 17 minutes left to play on a pair of Williams free throws. After Barton scored the next six, the Lady Falcons again got it down to just two after a three-point play conversion by Cox. Over the next two-plus minutes, Barton again shot out on a 10-2 run delivering the game's final blow. Barton would lead by as much as 15 late before the final six-point differential at the final buzzer.
Nyeshea Willie led all scorers with 20 on the night adding 13 rebounds. Cox paced the Lady Falcons with 14 as one of three in double-figures. Turnovers turned out to be the biggest difference as Pfeiffer shot better on the night 47% to Barton's 40%.
Pfeiffer's final game of the 2011-2012 season will be played on Friday night in senior night against Barton. Tip time is set for 5:30 p.m. with live stats and video being available through http://www.gofalconsports.com.
