SOFTBALL SUFFERS PAIR OF HEARTBREAKERS AS NEWBERRY SWEEPS ON BACK-TO-BACK WALKOFFS

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Host Newberry used a pair off walk-offs scoring four in the bottom of the eighth of game one and three in the bottom of the seventh in game two to sweep Pfeiffer University 8-7 and 6-5 in non-conference softball action on Thursday afternoon. The Wolves improve to 7-3 overall while the Lady Falcons drop their third and fourth-straight falling to 2-6.

Despite scoring three runs in the top of the eighth and doubling up Newberry 10-5 in the hit department, Pfeiffer fell victim in game one on an Ashley Roof walk-off three-run homer to center that capped off a four-run frame. Earlier in the eighth, the Lady Falcons scored three on a RBI-single from Lindsey Russell and two-run triple by Melanie Conklin. Conklin was thrown out at the plate trying to stretch it into an inside the park home run.

The Lady Falcons took a brief 2-1 lead in the third on a Wolves throwing error and the first run-scoring single delivered by Russell. After Newberry tallied three in their fourth, Pfeiffer cut it to one on Ashlee Ellen's two-out solo blast to left. Trailing by one entering the seventh, Andrea Wagner would lead off by reaching first on a passed ball after swinging at strike three. Wagner would later score the game-tying run on a Hannah Jackson groundout to second forcing extra innings.

In the nightcap, Pfeiffer held a 5-3 lead with just three outs to go as a fielding error started the frame for the Wolves. A stolen base and single later, Newberry had cut the deficit down to one, 5-4. Two more errors would lead to the tying-run and game-winner moments later.

Early on in game two, Kirsten Patterson's sac-fly put the Lady Falcons on the board in the first while Ellen picked up another RBI with her single to center in the third. After three by Newberry in the fourth, Pfeiffer scored their final trio of runs on a Sadie Saine fielder's choice and two throwing errors by Newberry.

Pfeiffer will now look towards league play heading to St. Andrews on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader with the Knights.
