GAFFNEY, S.C. – Limestone College scored four unanswered runs to close the game collecting a 5-3 win over Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas baseball action Saturday at Bob Prevatte Field. The Saints improve to 6-9 overall, 1-3 in league play while the Falcons drop to 9-8, 2-2.

Trailing 2-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Saints strung together four unanswered runs over the final three innings to collect the win. In the sixth, a leadoff double by senior catcher Josh Lyon (Indianapolis, Ind.) came around to tie the game at 2-2 on an RBI knock up the middle by sophomore leftfielder Chad Balderman (Irmo. S.C.) before sophomore DH Marcus Breeden (Norfolk, Va.) drove in the go-ahead run with a two-bagger.

Following the seven inning stretch, Limestone tacked on one more run following a one-out double by senior first baseman Jake Rierson (Oak Ridge, N.C.) before a sacrifice fly by senior third baseman Zach Howard (Mocksville, N.C.) closed the scoring for the home team in the eighth. Junior closer Cameron Culp (Gaffney, S.C.) then worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season, preserving the 5-2 win.

Three pitches into the game, the Falcons jumped out to a 1-0 lead after a leadoff triple by Jacob Yates (Blairs, Va.) scored on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Price (Asheville, N.C.). The Saints would counter in the home half of the third as an RBI single by Rierson capped a string of three straight hits by the Blue and Gold to start the frame.

With runners on second and third with one gone in the fifth, Limestone starter Josh White (Moravian Falls, N.C.) escaped the jam by forcing a pop up and a ground ball to retire the side with the 1-1 score intact. Pfeiffer would get to him in the sixth, however, as a solo job to rightfield by Cole McGraw (Claremont, N.C.) gave the visitors a 2-1 advantage.

White picked up the win to run his record to 1-1 on the season, tossing 5.1 innings and giving up just the two runs on seven hits. He struck out two. Limestone’s bullpen combined to throw 3.2 scoreless innings while not allowing a base hit. Culp picked up his first save of the year.

Tyler Ring (Concord, N.C.) was saddled with the loss to fall to 1-2 on the year. He gave up three runs on eight hits while striking out three. Dylan Norris (Boone, N.C.) and Chuck Ingram (Richfield, N.C.) each gave up a run in a combined three innings of work.

Yates paced the Falcons offense with two hits, including a triple, and a run scored while McGraw homered. Price also drove in a run.

Rierson led Limestone’s 10-hit attack, registering a pair of hits to go with two RBIs. Benson also collected two hits while Balderman and Howard each chipped in a hit and an RBI. Breeden tallied an RBI double.

The Saints and Falcons wrap up the three-game conference series with a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch for game one is set for 12 p.m.
