LEXINGTON, N.C. - The Pfeiffer University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Mars Hill College on Sunday afternoon at North Davidson High School. The Lions improve to 11-11 overall scoring a 7-2 win in game one while the Lady Falcons advance to 4-12 with a 15-10 slugfest win in game two.
In the opener, Mars Hill put up a crooked number in the third scoring six while adding their final run in the bottom of the fifth. Pfeiffer's lone bright spot of game one came in the seventh as a Celia Dew singled scored Mikaela Strickland and a RBI-single from Hannah Jackson plated Emily Workman with two outs. Dew and Jackson each finished the opener with two of the eight hits posted by the Lady Falcons.
In the wild game two, six of the nine starters for Pfeiffer posted multi-hit games as the Lady Falcons out-hit Mars Hill 18-15. Pfeiffer trailed 7-5 going to the top of the sixth until a six-spot gave them a four run lead. Jackson struck again with a two-run single while Ashlee Ellen and Strickland put up a run-scoring single. Shelby Brown would cap the frame off with a two-run double to left-center.
Mars Hill would storm right back with three in the sixth on a two-run blast in the mix before the Lady Falcons responded with RBI from Jackson and Lindsey Russell on singles and a groundout from Rebecca Foil.
Ellen led the way with a 4-for-5 outing in game two with three RBI including a two-run homer in the third. Melanie Conklin would finish with three hits while the top four in the order scored 11 of the 15 runs.
Pfeiffer will now return home on Tuesday afternoon hosting Barton in a Conference Carolinas matchup at 2:00 p.m.
