MISENHEIMER, N.C. – St. Francis University rallied all the way from down two sets to score a 3-2 (23-25, 21-25, 25-20, 26-24, 15-13) marathon victory over host Pfeiffer University in NCAA I men’s volleyball action on Tuesday night. The Red Flash improve to 9-10 overall on the year while the Falcons dip to 11-4.

In the opener, Pfeiffer never had a lead until the final points of the set grabbing their largest lead of the set when winning by two. Trailing by as much as three at 18-15, a Quentin Moore (Richmond, VA) kill would quietly start the rally as a later David Frazee (West Palm Beach, FL) kill tied the match at 20-20. Konstantin Weise (Berlin, GERMANY) would briefly put the Falcons up 22-21 until back-to-back kills by Alex Kane (York, PA) and Mark Kochan (Towaco, NJ) forced a Pfeiffer timeout with the Red Flash up 23-22. From there, back-to-back Moore kills and a service ace from Eric Edelman (Henrietta, NY) would put the Falcons up 1-0 in the match.

In set two, Pfeiffer wouldn’t look back after a Wiese kill put the hosts up 4-3 early as the Falcons would later race out to a 16-10 lead on a pair of kills by Caleb Brophy (Mission Viejo, CA) and another kill from Edelman. A Weise ace would make it 19-13 until three-straight attack errors by the Falcons brought St. Francis to within one also using a Kane kill. Edelman and Moore would produce the set’s final kills with a Red Flash attack error in between for a 25-21 set win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Tied 16-16 in set three after another Wiese putdown, two-straight attack errors by the Falcons would give the Red Flash just enough cushion to stave off a sweep. Two Kane kills and a Michael Krepp (Pittsburgh, PA) kill would post St. Francis out to a 21-19 lead before four more Pfeiffer errors gave the Red Flash a 25-20 set victory and new life.

Set four needed extra points to decide a winner as a Brophy ace and attack error by St. Francis squared the set at 22-all. With set point, 24-23, Pfeiffer got a second chance on a Red Flash attack miscue, before turning right around and faulting twice themselves to give the visitors their final set point needed.

The fifth and final set saw Pfeiffer get out to an 11-8 lead after Brophy’s final kill of the night until errors again plagued the Falcons as an Adam Roche (Cochranton, PA) kill even the set at a dozen apiece. After two more Pfeiffer attack errors, St. Francis would use a service error by the hosts to secure the 15-13 set and 3-2 match win.

The marathon match saw 46 situations with a tie score and 18 lead changes. Pfeiffer committed 54 errors in the match, 37 on the attack hitting just .176 in the loss. St. Francis hit .241 in the win led by Kane’s 18 kills while using 17 total team blocks on defense. Brophy would end up with 18 for the Falcons in the loss.
