MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Coker College and host Pfeiffer University split a quick Conference Carolinas baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Joe Ferebee Field. The Falcons won the opener 7-4 while the Cobras bounced back for a 3-0 win in the seven-inning game two. Pfeiffer improves to 13-9 overall, 5-3 in league play while Coker moves to 13-12, 6-5.
In game one, the Cobras struck first in the second using a rare fielder’s choice to right-center, stolen base, wild pitch and eventual run-scoring infield-single to second off the bat of Lucas Britt (Myrtle Beach, SC). In the Pfeiffer third, a pair of runs would come around after a pair of hit-by-pitches to Aarin Sharpe (Winterville, NC) and Kevin Price (Asheville, NC) and pair of RBI-singles from Justin Harris (Albany, NY) and Dalton Lindley (Siler City, NC).
The Falcons would blow open game one with five in the fifth starting with Lindley’s run-scoring single again the brought home Price. Cole McGraw (Claremont, NC) quickly followed with a RBI-double down the right field line while Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC) chimed in with his own run-producing single to right. Jacob Yates (Blairs, VA) would round out the frame with a two-run single to left-center that would bring in Matt Wade (Chapel Hill, NC) and Lyon.
Coker would make things interesting with three in the eighth starting with a quick Taylor Martin (San Jose, CA) double and RBI-single from Jake Frazier (O’Fallon, IL). Fico Kondla (Miami, FL) would earn a RBI the hard way getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded while Nathan Wilson (Milliken, CO) scored Chad Nader (Rock Hill, SC) with his fielder’s choice.
Tyler Ring (Concord, NC) would earn the win for the Falcons tossing 7.1 innings allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out six. Craig Bolton (Shelby, NC) picked up the save in the ninth allowing just one hit with two strikeouts. Saturday marked Bolton’s 12th appearance of the season, still not allowing a single run to score.
Game two began with a pair of runs for Coker in the top of the first as Kondla and Frazier delivered the run-scoring singles. Insurance in the form of Wilson plating on a wild pitch in the sixth led to the Cobras third and final run.
Pfeiffer had plenty of chances in game two with four quality opportunities in the second, third, fourth and fifth frames, but Coker started Dan Meyer (Seaford, NY) eventually worked himself out of each jam to preserve the shutout. Meyer tossed all seven frames scattering just four hits with three strikeouts in the win.
The rubber-game of the three-game set will take place on Sunday afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m. Live stats will be available from Joe Ferebee Field through http://www.gofalconsports.com.
