MINNEOLA, F.L. - The Pfeiffer University softball team began their week-long spring break trip in Florida with a split against East Stroudsburg on Monday afternoon. The Lady Falcons scored a 2-1 in the opener while falling 4-1 in the second tilt. Pfeiffer ends the day 9-17 while ESU moves to 1-9.
A Cara McNeil solo homer in the top of the fourth gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead until the Lady Falcons made a sixth-inning comeback to score the win. Julianna Bullington led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Emily Workman. Celia Dew would drive in pinch-runner Andrea Wagner while Melanie Conklin, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, immediately followed with an eventual game-winning double to plate Dew. Conklin also earned the win in the circle going the distance allowing just the one run on two hits, the first hit came on McNeil's round-tripper, while striking out 10.
In game two, Pfeiffer's lone run came in the first as Conklin continued her hot streak at the plate with a leadoff single and a swiping of second. Conklin would eventually score on a throwing error by East Stroudsburg with two outs. With two outs in the fourth, a bases-clearing double by Brandi Stettler became the big blow for ESU. A RBI-single by Rebecca Smith would add insurance to end the inning. Conklin would finish game two 2-for-4 while wrapping up the doubleheader 5-for-8 on the day.
Pfeiffer will take Tuesday off before taking on Mercy and West Chester on Wednesday morning in Clermont, Florida just outside of Orlando.
