MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Lees-McRae College used timely hitting in both games en route to a Conference Carolinas softball sweep of host Pfeiffer University on Sunday afternoon. The Bobcats, who scored a 6-0 win in game one followed by a 1-0 nine-inning victory in game two, move to 12-19 overall, 3-1 in league play while the Lady Falcons fall to 14-21, 4-6.
Lees-McRae started game one scoring a pair of runs in the third beginning with a rare RBI bunt double by Kim Coley (Marion, NC). Holli Crickenberger (Boydton, VA) followed with a routine RBI double to put the Bobcats up two. Karli Robb (Hayes, VA) began a three-run four with a run-scoring single to left before Crickenberger struck again with a two-run double to right-center.
A Pfeiffer throwing error on a pickoff attempt at third led the Bobcats’ final run. Robb and Crickenberger each finished game one with a pair of Lees-McRae’s seven hits while Celia Dew (Sanford, NC) had the only multi-hit game for the Lady Falcons.
Game two came down to the ninth frame after both teams failed to score with the international tiebreaker in effect in the eighth. With Amanda Decker (Apex, NC) at third with one out, Robb would line a single just over the head of Dew at shortstop to score Decker with the eventual game-winner. In the Lady Falcon ninth, Kirsten Patterson (Anthem, AZ) singled to move Dew over to third with one out but a later strikeout and groundout to first would give Lees-McRae the Sunday sweep.
Pfeiffer’s best chance came back in the initial frame of game two as Melanie Conklin (Wellington, OH) led off with a double to right-center. Bobcats starter Holli Crickenberger (Boydton, VA) would get out of the jam to help herself pick up the win tossing all nine frames striking out 10 while scattering four hits.
Pfeiffer quickly gets back to Conference Carolinas action on Monday hosting King at 2:00 p.m. from Jack Ingram Field.
