MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Cole Sheen (Edmonton, ALBERTA) led the way with a game-high three goals as 12th-ranked Pfeiffer University escaped Lindenwood University with a 7-6 season-ending victory on Sunday afternoon. The Falcons end 2012 12-6 overall while the Lions complete their season at 8-7.
Sheen started scoring at the end of a quiet first quarter with 1:17 remaining as Tucker Hammock (Marietta, GA) picked up the assist. In the second, Robert Hope (Peterborough, ONTARIO) and James Shepherd (St. John, NEW BRUNSWICK) made it 3-0 Falcons 4:36 into the period before Jack Carroll (Webster Groves, MO) got the Lions on the board.
McNein Hewitt (Whitby, ONTARIO) followed just over 70 seconds later to get Lindenwood within one at 3-2, until Sheen hit on his second pushing the hosts lead back out to a pair with 1:58 before the half. With half a second left in the period, the Lions Josh Arras (St. Louis, MO) found the back of the net for a 4-3 Pfeiffer lead at the break.
Just 76 seconds into the third frame, Carter McCracken (Lakefield, ONTARIO) knotted the contest up at 4-4 with his unassisted strike before Hammock and Sheen registered back-to-back goals again sending the Falcons up two now 6-4. After an Arras man-up goal for Lindenwood ended the third, Kory Lutes (Orlando, FL) started the fourth with his man-up strike as Pfeiffer led 7-5. Lindenwood would make things interesting in the final minute as McCracken scored with 52 ticks left, but the Falcons defense would hold steady to grab the 7-6 win.
Lindenwood held advantages in most offensive categories on Sunday only to be shut down by Falcon netminder Hayden Kirk (Farmingdale, NY) who made 13 saves on the day. Sunday would make Kirk’s 10th double-digit save effort of the year.
