MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University’s Director of Athletics Mary Ann Sunbury has announced the hiring of Dusty Blake as baseball’s new head coach. Blake, who spent the 2005 season with the Falcons as an assistant coach, returns to take the helm from division one USC Upstate. Blake replaces long-time coach Mark Hayes who joins former Pfeiffer coach Chris Pollard, now head coach at Duke, as an assistant coach.
“We’re excited to have Dusty Blake come to Pfeiffer as our head baseball coach,” remarked Sunbury. “He is hungry to be a head coach and this is the perfect place for him since he is familiar with Pfeiffer. We feel that he continue to improve Pfeiffer baseball with his energy and knowledge. He has proven himself as a great assistant and we’re looking forward to having him as a part of our staff.”
Blake comes back to Pfeiffer after handling all operations for USC Upstate. His duties included daily management of the pitching staff, coordinator of recruiting, practice planning, strength and conditioning along with agility training for the pitching staff. The hurlers maintained a team ERA just over four last season leading the Spartans to a 33-win season.
"I couldn't be more ecstatic to join Pfeiffer University as the head baseball coach,” commented Blake. "This is a tremendous opportunity for me and my family. We are thrilled and it is an honor to be welcomed into the Pfeiffer family."
Prior to USC Upstate, Blake spent five seasons at Wofford College in the same roles competing in the Southern Conference. Wofford’s pitching staff set a school-record for strikeouts in a season back in 2008 following that up with the second and third-highest in 2010 and 2011.
Nearby, Blake spent two seasons with Catawba College as an assistant coach with guiding the Asheboro Copperheads of the Coastal Plain League in 2007. During his first stint at Pfeiffer, Blake helped guide the Falcons to a 2005 Conference Title under Coach Hayes.
Blake spent his collegiate playing career at Appalachian State graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education. Blake later achieved his Master’s in Organizational Business and Leadership from Pfeiffer.
