Misenheimer, NC – The Pfeiffer University Falcons are currently ranked second in the nation in scoring, averaging 96.2 points per game. The Falcons rolled over the Royals 103-91 by leading for over 38 minutes of play. Pfeiffer improves to 13-9 overall with a conference record of 10-5. Queens falls to 6-17 overall and 5-11 in the conference.
Pfeiffer dominated the first half and outscored Queens 64-39. The Falcons went 22-for-47 from the field, 7-for-18 from the arc, and 12-for-14 from the charity stripe in the first 20 minutes. The Royals were 13-for-33 from the field, 2-for-7 from three-point range, and 11-for-13 for free throws. Pfeiffer led by as many as 29 points before going into the locker room for the period break. Queens battled back and was eventually able to cut Pfeiffer’s lead to seven points at 95-88 with 2:51 second left in the game. However, the Falcons were not prepared to let go to the win after such a strong display of scoring might. Queens was able to add three more points to their total, but was unable to shut down Pfeiffer who scored eight more before the final buzzer.
"It was vintage Pfeiffer basketball in the first half," said Pfeiffer coach Dave Davis. "Our defensive pressure and offensive attack was as good as it has been all year. My assistant coach Jeremy Currier made some line up changes before the game that proved to make a major difference in our play on both ends. We pounded the ball inside at times and Chris Woods was really really good, 32 points on 16 shots is an incredible performance. Danny Cummins was everywhere tonight. He plays with such heart and he really led us defensively. Davon Gilliard again put tremendous pressure on the ball which is the staple for our defense. We got major contributions from 11 different players and again our team shows the ability to bounce back after a tough loss at Mt. Olive Monday. Jeff Pettiway did a great job feeding the post and had six assists and Robert McGriff was a monster on the glass with seven offensive rebounds."
Pfeiffer was 37-for-81 from the field totaling 45.7 percent. The Falcons sank only 28.6 percent of their shots from three-point range going 8-for-28. Queens’ percentages were better, shooting 47.8 percent from the field and 45 percent from three point range, but the Falcons were able to score 40 points off of 23 Queens’ turnovers. The Falcons edged out Queens 46-41 in the rebounding battle.
