BRISTOL, T.N. - Host King College cashed in on 16 of their 23 free throw attempts to upset visiting Pfeiffer University 70-64 in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action on Saturday night. The Tornado improve to 7-4 overall, 3-4 in league play with the win. The Lady Falcons who were sent to the line just 10 times on Saturday snap their five-game win streak dropping to 9-2, 4-2.
The first half saw the lead change on 11 different ocassions aS King had to play a majority of the catch up in the first 20 minutes. Carter Williams put the Lady Falcons up three with 6:32 to play in the half before Brittany Cox did the same at the three minute mark putting the Lady Falcons up 33-30.
Kelly Jackson would tally the next five points for King while a Cox jumper squared the contest at 35-35 with 1:26 remaining. The final points of the half came as the Tornado again benefitted from the charity stripe as Bonnie Durrett made it a 37-35 King lead at the break.
Down by 12 with 8:46 to play in the second half, a Bridget Rothert basket would help start the rally as a three from Williams and Cox sliced the lead down to four, 61-57 with 4:49 on the clock. After a Christina Harvey jumper and ensuing turnover by the Tornado, Cox hit the go-ahead three with 3:18 remaining to put the Lady Falcons up 62-61.
Harvey would later break a 62-62 tie hitting the back end of two free throws until back-to-back jumpers by Durrett would give King the lead for good. Late free throws would aid the Tornado in securing their six-point victory at the final horn.
Johnson led the Tornado with 21 points on the night as one of three in double-figures. Cox would lead the way for Pfeiffer dropping in 25 on 50% shooting from the field while Williams finished with 11. Kellie Rhoney would add 11 assists to help lead the Lady Falcon offense.
