HARTSVILLE, S.C. - A go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh turned into the eventual game-winner as host Coker College defeated Pfeiffer University 5-4 to open a Conference Carolinas baseball series on Friday afternoon. The win sends the Cobras to 15-7 on the year, 7-3 in league play while the Falcons drop to 9-16, 5-3.
After Coker struck first in the opening frame, Pfeiffer responded with a tying-run in the second as a two-out walk to Kyle Hackney paid off in the form of a Dalton Lindley RBI-triple to left-center on an 0-2 pitch. The Cobras would use a pair of Pfeiffer errors and a run-scoring double by Fico Kondla to grab a 3-1 lead through two.
Pfeiffer came back for two in the third to square the contest at three as Jacob Yates started with a double to left and later scored on a Cole McGraw single to left. McGraw would later tally the tying run on a Matt Wade single to right.
After a quiet few frames, Coker would take a 4-3 lead on a triple and double to lead off the sixth before a Jon Gray homer tied it again at the seventh-inning stretch. The decisive run came with a leadoff double and groundout in the bottom of the seventh.
Kondla and Gray would each lead their respective teams with three hits on the day. tyler Witzel picked up the win for Coker tossing seven frames allowing all four runs on eight hits. Zach Loraine picked up the two-inning save without a blemish to his line.
