FLORENCE, S.C. - Pfeiffer University split a non-conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Francis Marion University dropping a 1-0 heartbreaker in game one before bouncing back for a 5-4 victory in game two. At the end of the day, the Lady Falcons move to 13-21 on the year while the Patriots slide to 23-21.
Small ball in the first inning of game one would lead to the Patriots only needed run of the game as an infield single, sacrifice bunt and single to center gave Francis Marion their 1-0 win on eight pitches. Pfeiffer couldn't muster any offense in the opener as Hannah Jackson's leadoff single to start the game would be the Lady Falcons only hit of game one. Lindsey Russell suffered the tough-luck loss in the circle allowing the one run on five hits with five strikeouts.
After the Patriots scored one in the first inning of game two, the Lady Falcons would finally break through with three in the third starting with a go-ahead two-run single to center by Sadie Saine. Saine would drive in Emily Workman and Lexie Brock after both reached with singles. Julianna Bullington would later add the third run plating Saine with a base knock to left.
Francis Marion made it a 3-2 game with another tally in the fifth until Pfeiffer added their final two taking advantage of two key Patriot errors. Workman would pick up the lone RBI in the inning reaching on the first of two errors as Khristin Isley scored despite the miscue. Brock would follow by reaching on the second-straight mistake by the Patriots resulting in Celia Dew scoring an unearned and eventual game-winning run. Francis Marion would make things interesting with single runs in the sixth and seventh but closer Shelby Brown would save the win for Sam Jarmusch tossing the final two innings.
Pfeiffer quickly gets back to action on Wednesday hosting #25 Lenoir-Rhyne at 3:00 p.m. from Jack Ingram Field. Live stats for both contests will be available courtesy of http://www.gofalconsports.com.
