MILLEDGEVILLE, GA- The Pfeiffer University women’s soccer team (1-3) used a dominant second half to secure its first victory of the season, a 2-0 road win over Georgia College (1-2). The Lady Falcons scored twice in the final 45 minutes, and outshot the Bobcats in the second half, en route to the shutout victory. For the season, Pfeiffer has scored four of its five goals in the second halves of games.
The Lady Falcons didn’t record a shot until the 24th minute, when Mandi Roan fired a shot on goal but Jessica Catapano would make the save. The Lady Falcons then fired three shots in the next five minutes but were kept off the scoreboard thanks to Catapano. The half ended with a flurry of offense from the Bobcats. The hosts took three shots, two on net, and one corner kick in the frame’s final 4:07 but goalkeeper Kate Halligan and the Lady Falcons defensive unit stood strong. The half ended with the Bobcats holding a 9-6 advantage in shots and Halligan recording five saves.
Halligan was tested two minutes into the second half, and made another save to keep the game scoreless. Freshman Brae Buster broke the scoreless tie with her second goal of the season, in the 51st minute. Buster took a feed from junior midfielder Kayla Rodriguez and found the back of the net. Just over 11 minutes later, the Lady Falcons benefited from Georgia scoring an own goal. The lead proved to be insurmountable for the Bobcats, who couldn’t figure out Halligan or the Pfeiffer defense.
For the match, Georgia held a slight 16-14 advantage in shots. Halligan made nine stops in her first career shutout, while Catapano made five saves in the losing effort.
The Bobcats took five corners to three for Pfeiffer.
The Lady Falcons return to action on Sunday afternoon when they host No. 22 Queens at 1 p.m. The match will be Pfeiffer’s home opener.
