BANNER ELK, NC - The Pfeiffer University women's volleyball team (2-7, 1-0 Conference Carolinas) won their first conference matchup 3-1 on the road at Lees-McRae tonight. The match was the first conference contest of the 2013 season for both squads, and Pfeiffer's ninth game in a 12 game road swing to open the season.
Behind solid offensive performances by senior Milana Mervosh and freshman Laura Fortner, the Lady Falcons jumped out to an early lead in the match and took games one and two by scores of 25-23 and 25-20 respectively. Mervosh posted nine total kills on the match as Fortner contributed seven to push Pfeiffer to a 36-29 edge in the kill column. Game three was a slight misstep for the Lady Falcons and went to the Bulldogs 25-18.
Pfeiffer would be undeterred, and after going down 4-1 to start game four, battled with Lees-McRae through nine ties and two lead changes. Game four appeared to be in the bag for the Bulldogs when they went up 23-19 on the Lady Falcons following a kill from Jordan Banta. Pfeiffer however, refused to be counted out and following a kill by junior Allison Rosas and five straight serves from freshman Haley Denny, stole game four from Lees-McRae 25-23.
"I'm proud of the way we fought tonight," said Head Coach Paul Lawson in reaction to the win. "It feels really good to get that first conference win, and we're going to continue to fight, all the way to the end."
Defensively the Lady Falcons were led by Denny who bested all players with 15 total digs for the match. Sophomore Emily Wall led the way in assists for Pfeiffer with 16, sharing the load with junior Meghan Davis who chipped in 14 for the match.
Pfeiffer has little time to enjoy the win as they travel to King tomorrow for their second conference matchup in as many days.
