SUMTER, S.C. – The Pfeiffer University men’s and women’s tennis teams competed in the ITA Regionals this weekend and each team had players advance to play on Sunday.
On the men’s side, the doubles team of Axel Woerner and Loic Minery advanced to semifinal play of the “B” doubles draw, on the final day of competition, before falling to North Georgia’s Gantt and Santos, 8-6.
Hannah Watson advanced for the women’s team in singles action, and won her quarterfinal match against Belmont Abbey’s Paige French in the B singles draw, 6-0 and 6-0. She later fell in the semifinals to Newberry’s Vanessa Ortiz by scores of 7-5, 0-6, and 1-6.
Woerner was solid in the B singles bracket, advancing to the round of 16 before dropping his match in three sets, 7-6, 3-6 and 3-6.
The competition wrapped up on Sunday evening, but the teams don’t have much time to recover. The women’s team has a makeup match against Catawba on Thursday at 3 p.m. Both teams will wrap up fall season play on Oct 4-6 when they travel to Fayetteville, N.C. to compete in the Methodist Invite.
